Hello Canaries... Just a quick thread to gage your collective opinions of Chris Hughton. I'm a Newcastle United fan and was gutted and sickened by his sacking from the Toon job So delighted to see him flourishing at a Premier League club - I was cheering you yellows on against Sunderland, (naturally!) and just wondered if you're as delighted with him as I was with him when he was our manager. I realise that Paul Lambert is a legend with you guys, not to mention an almost impossible act to follow! But as an outsider, I don't watch everything that goes on at Carrow Road, so was hoping you could express your opinions here...
As you say CH had a tough act to follow and with the start we had there were many fans questioning his appointment. As soon as Lambert left, Hughton was always my first choice as his successor and the way he has turned things around after that poor start is remarkable. A legend in the making IMO P.S. If and when CH leaves us, I can guarantee that it will not be in such acrimonious circumstances as his predecessor, he's too much of a gentleman.
Lambert isn't considered such a legend now that he is taking action against the club, as well as the cub taking action against Lambert. Some people have gone so far as to call him 'he should not be named' but I think that's way too far and unfair. The title should be for a certain previous board member and I dare not repeat his name. I'm really pleased we have Hughton as manager and was confused and disappointed with his sacking from Newcastle. He's definitely sorted out our defence. We got three clean sheets throughout the entire of last season. This time we've got 4 or 5 already! With the exception of Fulham, Chelsea and Liverpool the most we've conceded in a game is 1. Until Turner was injured we had a back four that was entirely made up of Hughton's signings. Bassong has been excellent for us, and he scored (which you guys must be pleased about). Always liked Newcastle as I have family who used to live there so good luck for the rest of the season.
Shaky start but all sorted now. I too like KIO was keen on CH and he has just given us our best ever 8 game run in the PL. What more can I say. I agree with all the commments above too.
Bassong was a fantastic player for us - was gutted to see him leave too. HIs career went to poop at Spurs... glad to see the ex-Newcastle duo doing well!
I'm always grateful for what Lambert achieved here and it's sad the way it ended. But Hughton was my first choice manager, and even with the shaky start to the season I still believed he was the right guy for the job.I'm more than delighted he is our manager. (Just one small criticism, but just my opinion, I think he could make subs sooner, 5 or 10 minutes isn't really enough time for any player to get into the game.
The footballs been a bit ropey to be honest but he's got the points on the board and sorted the defence. Ruined the attack however.
He hasn't ruined our attack, as you can see in most games we have created a lot, it's just the finishing that have let us down.
Its not the finishing, We don't create as much and we certainly don't create as many good chances. Its just how it is, he's sacrificed fluency and movement for rigidity and stability. Therefore he's improved the defence significantly but ruined the attack. I don't think it's possible to have both unless you have amazing players. I personally prefer the fluidity and movement, whilst Lambert was a bit keen with the long ball (as is Hughton) he always advocated movement and switching of positions under presumption it was more likely we would concede or score.
The difference is we attack as a team and defend as a team now. Maybe we don't create as many as last season, but we are very much so still creating plenty of chances. It is just our lack of finishing. Think on the Man United game, we created as many chances as United did.
Hughton's only attacking fault is not getting another real option in before the end of the summer (but he did try with Kane to be fair, and that only went wrong due to Kane getting injured). I'd imagine that this will be his first priorty to sort out in january.
Hughtons first task was steadying the ship his done that and he has drastically improved a leaky defence. Attack wise I think he has a few aces up his sleeve, the biggest problem for us is Holt being isolated due to wide players not cutting in and our two central midfielders don't posses the vision to link the team together just they don't spot things, hopefully we'll acquire a deep lying playmaker who can tackle like Biglia (might be a big ask). Also we need a top class forward like I mentioned during the summer but I think in January we'll go for a quick fix looking to sort things out properly over the summer if we keep up.
Agree With this; given his late summer efforts, I think we will get someone good, maybe in the Benteke mould Also someone who can put a decent cross in would be nice!
On Sunday we dominated the first half until they scored. we dominated the best possession and pressed their midfield. But to be honest we only looked reaaly capable of scoring was when we played longer balls into space. We do tend to over egg the pudding at times. But we have to because apart from Holt, there is no-one else in the box. That means we have to up our percentage of goals to chances. And if we don't that means the defense has to be tighter than ever. Its not my favourite style of play but at the moment its looking like another season in the Prem and the finances that come with that. And maybe financial stability might just bring a change of style.
