I'm still in favour of Pardew despite our recent 'difficulties' but really, has he only just realised this?

Newcastle boss Pardew: Lack of summer spending may have been a mistake

The Magpies manager is "analysing" whether or not the relative paucity of transfer activity before the season was a mistake, with his side having lost four games in a row

Newcastle manager Alan Pardew concedes that he may have made a mistake by not investing more in his playing squad during the summer transfer window.

The Magpies have endured a difficult start to the campaign, beset by injuries and suspensions, and sit just two points clear of the relegation zone following a run of four consecutive defeats.

And, with Vurnon Anita the only regular first-teamer recruited in the summer, Pardew told Sky Sports: "We have been unlucky but we are in the process of analysing whether we under-cooked it [the transfer window] and that's what we should do. It would be silly not to."

A number of key players such as Yohan Cabaye and Steven Taylor are set for long spells on the sidelines and the Toon boss is considering dipping his toes further into the transfer market in January.

"It's increased the discussion mode on that," he admitted. "We obviously had an idea of where it was going to go but it probably is going to change before we get there. It's very important just to keep our eye on the ball." :emoticon-0102-bigsm

Newcastle welcome Wigan to St James' Park on Monday in a vital Premier League clash and Pardew feels that the Magpies must stay focused if they are to bring their losing run to an end.

"We have to win a game," he declared. "We are desperate to win and sometimes desperation to win leads you down wrong avenues, so we have got to be careful.

"When you have lost two or three - and now four for us - you start doing other people's jobs, and it's very important just to focus on your job and do your job."

Sounds to me like he is diplomatically telling someone to get their finger out. He should be careful though and remember what happened to his predecessor when he commented on such matters. If he thinks using the royal "we" is guarded enough a barb and will save him from the wrath of the owner he is very much mistaken.

It's good to see Pardew making these noises as it means if we fail in January to bring in the necessary players he won't be able to trot out the usual "we tried our best but transfer's are complicated deals" sh*t.

If he does it will make him look a clown, I think it's good that he's but subtle pressure on MA & DL to produce the goods.

Has to be careful though as Hughton didn't toe the line and paid a heavy price. I agree in normal football management roles it might be seen as cute. But he isn't Fergie and isn't in as strong a position (unless this 8 years is clauseless!). The likes of Mike and Roman don't take kindly to some little pauper of a manager telling them when to spend money.

Yeah I agree, but I think he knows the fans are getting a little restless (some more than others) and that we need to know where he stands on the strength of the current playing squad.

He couldn't really come out and say "our squad is strong and we're not looking to strengthen just yet", the backlash would have been far worse if he'd done the latter.

Its true he couldn't say that, he can't really win and therefore I wonder whether its best to just say nowt. Mainly though because previous experience tells us Mike digs his heels in further when questioned. The thought of that happening and a centre half not coming in as a minimum fills me with dread <yikes>

If that happened it would be one of the most inept business decisions in the history of the club, and lets be honest there have been a few <laugh>

I reckon Pardew has loaned out Good to get about half a dozen competitive games under his belt and then he'll bring him back in the January window into our squad as CB cover. Don't think for one minute he'll sign a CB until summer at least when they'll hope to get Douglas for zilch.

I think is a genuine problem to be honest, we've seen these gambles taken previously. It sounds insane to a fan but Mike just looks at the bottom line and if we can survive on what we've got and possibly pick up, then why risk bringing someone in?

I haven't got a problem with the risk taking as every business decision carries some risk no matter how big or little. What does grate on me is that Mike's risks are always the cheap option.

If the risks were balanced out then I could handle it, but would it have really affected the club financially to pay the going rate in the summer for one of Douglas or Debuchy, even De Jong for that matter. With just one of those mentioned players we could be sat here with 3-6 extra points.

The amount of money we saved in the summer that we now stand to lose out on at the end of the season due to our inevitable lower league finish would have been worth spending.

We all knew it was too big a risk to sign just 1 first teamer. We've needed a CB for over 3 seasons and we've struggled for depth in LW and RW for a while too. We also allowed 2 strikers to leave and didn't replace them. Very silly indeed

    Such a fool.

We've needed defenders the past 3-4 transfer windows.

He was released in June and is playing for Roda JC.

A bit unlucky with injuries, but I saw him in his first game and thought he had a great future in front of him.
