    Wrong.

Wenger bought the players he did precisely because of the amount of money he had to spend. If he'd had a budget available like Chelsea, City or Utd's. Do you think he would have bought the same players ?

I think he would have bought the same players. Most of them were young players with potential who just haven't worked out. Wenger has shown he likes to get players while they're young, and I think he would have done the same thing if we'd had the money. On the other hand, Arshavin and Podolski were top class players who should have worked out, yet they never seemed to fit into the system Wenger plays. So with both varieties of player, Wenger seems to have made mistakes. So, in this instance I agree with Arsenal87.

Well yes and that's exactly why they want to keep him. They can continue running this model and still maintain Champions League football.(not sure if that will be the case next Season though - unless we spend)

Wenger is great when he does sign players and I would love to see him identify and bring in his TOP targets (regardless of price) but itb would mean a complete change in strategy.

I have top admit I hate this current arrangement. Footballs is a business but its depressing to think about it in that way. We should be trying to win on the pitch above all else.

If what Gazidis was saying about us having £30m more per season comes to fruition and we can spend it on the squad, then we might see Wenger bringing in the players that he wants to, rather than what he can afford to.

It's not just about players, tactically speaking as well, Wenger seems to be clueless. It's like the only tactic we have is: go out, play football, and score.

Anyway Guardiola - For the guests who use this site because there's no debate on their own. I'll say it again. Unless the board release the purse strings, then if Guardiola came in to replace Wenger tomorrow, he would face exactly the same set of conditions. He's not got a magic wand that will sprinkle fairy dust and make it all better. Whoever is in charge has got a lot of work to do to turn things around. Personally I think Wenger can still do that. With the extra money coming in from the Emirates deal, I think he'll be even better equipped to do so <ok>

(* waits to see the lurkers go into meltdown about this comment . . . <laugh>)

Guardiola's greatest attribute may be to attract top class Spanish players to the Emirates. However, I'd still rather have Wenger for now.

In this thread i've been saying that Wenger has gone stale with Arsenal and this game and this season so far has confirmed this. All i'm hearing is getting new players etc, but what is so bad about our first 11? Player for player, we have a superior team to Swansea, yet they outplayed us. Not some stoke city rubbish, they played the Wenger way, on the ground and with flair. What does that tell you?

I'm with gent and PISKIE - Pep was blessed with great players. More telling perhaps is that he got the jitters BECAUSE he was successful; what on earth would he be like when his new team, in a new country, with a squad of lesser quality is struggling and the fans are booing?

Remeber also Pep is Barca through and through, and this helped him to bond with his core group of players and they would do anything for him. Iniesta, Xavi, Fab - all have Pep as their hero. How would he adjust to being just another hired gun in a foreign country, with miserable weather, and in a city where his club is just one several strongly supported clubs?

Then we have the question of the unknown constraints that we suspect Wenger is operating under. If real, how would Pep cope? This is the man from the same Barca that spent many 10s of millions on a succession of palyters depsite being 400m Euro in debt.

Our problem is less the manager and more about the clubs financial constraints.

I can only dream of being able to afford a season ticket, and can only afford to attend a couple of games a season (replacing a broken combi boiler means I wont be able to go at all this season). So I'm not one to demand the club risks its sound financial footing for a mad dash for prizes if it means we will suffer consequences in the future. I find it distasteful for clubs to be able to build debt knwoinbg that they will somehow get away with it. Football has to get real.
