Very true. Hot spin galvanised pipework is commonly used offshore as it displays excellent resitance to atmosheric corrosion. Commonly applied to low carbon managanese steels for protection and far cheaper than deploying a more exotic material like say, Duplex Dtainless Steel (which has high chromium, nickel and molybdenum contents) whic inherently give excellent corrosion resistance and within seconds perform a passive layer of chrome oxide which is corrosion resistant. The only downside is that it is far more expensive than low carbon managanese carbon steels. If anyone would like to know some more about material characteristics, metallurgy, mechanical properites and corrosion resistance please don't hesitate to ask It's actually what I work in and actually something I know at least a smidgen about it.
