Spent most of tonight on BBC 4 watching a couple of programmes on the Beach Boys. The in laws went to see them in London last month/this month, looks like all is not well within the camp as usual but Pet Sounds is still a great album.
Even from their earliest days the inter-relationships betwen members was never easy. It was probably made more difficult due to the fact that you had 3 brothers there. Now we have a situation where Brian Wilson appears to be attempting to re-write the bands history and fight his own deamons all at the same time.
My mum gave me a beach boys record when I was... maybe 13 it was so different from anything I would listen to and I would never admit to listening to it, I played it to death. When I was an adult I went to a record shop and asked for the Beach Boys album with God Only Knows on. Pet Sounds is a great album.
I have to admit that the beach Boys are probably my favourite band. The majority of their albums were merely collations of single songs with the exception of Surfs Up and Pet Sounds. It's not until you either see them live or listen to live recordings that you find this neat and tidy close-harmony group are in fact a rock and roll band. Sure, as with all bands, there is some real crap in their discography but there are some really good songs that match anything done by their contempories.
I agree there are some top songs by the Beach Boys, Pet Sounds stands out but there are others. There's a thread about my nuts if your interested?
