Should Sunderland finish above Newcastle, given the money they’ve spent?

    I was under the impression that they were going to tear our Championship quality side apart this season, especially with a World Cup superstar in their ranks.

    Unfortunately Riveros has had little impact.

    In theory Sunderland should finish above Newcastle but as people have said on here it doesn't buy succcess.

    If anyone should know this its Newcastle fans and more recently Real Madrid. They've spent something like £400 million in the last 2 seasons and have one Copa Del Rey to show for it.

    For once I'm not actually envious of what other teams are spending. Last couple of seasons I was a little disheartened at not signing any impact players or high profile world cup stars but now I think it's good to let them get on with it. I have faith in our scouting network and Graham Carr seems to have a real eye for raw talent. Ben Arfa and Tiote for a combined £8.5 million is staggering, even if Ben Arfa only manages 50% of his undoubted ability next seaon.

    Yeah, they should be finishing above us. Half of our squad is the one that got relegated and the rest has been bought on a shoestring budget.

    But, up to now, they aren't, so happy days.

    Frankly we should be higher than you. Shows what a good job Hughton did. I suspect we'll find out if Bruce is up to the job soon enough.

    I don't know what the figure is TBH. He sold a lot of crap so there's been some churning going on and what the overall investment has been is difficult to say. He's certainly spent some money, but Roy Keane worked on the theory that if you buy every available player you're bound to find some good ones. Reducing the squad size paid for a lot of SB's buys.
