DIEHARD Rangers fan Jamie Murphy will "seriously consider" dropping down the divisions to play for the club this summer.

Motherwell forward Murphy, who is out of contract at the end of the season, has again been linked with a move to Ibrox.

The Gers are currently unable to sign any players due to a 12-month transfer embargo imposed by the SFA for failure to pay taxes. However, they will be able to register free agents from September 1, 2013.

Gers boss Ally McCoist and scout Neil Murray have identified several targets who could boost their threadbare squad next season. And Murphy, who was linked with a move to the club he supported as a boy at the start of last season, is believed to be one of them.

His former team-mate Bob Malcolm believes a move to Rangers would interest the 23-year-old –even though he would be playing in the Second or even the Third Division. The former Gers ace said: "At the start of last season Blackpool were keen to sign Jamie, but he decided to stay at Motherwell.

"But I think to progress his career he now needs to move on. It is inevitable. I know he is a Rangers fan so going to Ibrox is something that would interest him.

"I don't know what Jamie himself is thinking. Maybe he doesn't want to go down to the Second or even the Third Division.

"But a few years ago Rangers bid £1million for Mark Reynolds and Motherwell knocked it back. He eventually moved to Sheffield Wednesday.

"Jamie was at the club when that happened and I think that he will realise that getting the chance to move to Rangers might not come around again."

Malcolm spent nine memorable years at Rangers and believes Murphy, who he played with during a spell at Motherwell in the 2008/09 season, would be a success in Govan.

And he is convinced that having to drop down the leagues would not deter him – as was the case with former Hearts and Scotland Under-21 winger David Templeton back August.

Malcolm said: "The Rangers fans would love Jamie; he is direct, is good in the air and he scores goals as well. He is skilful and very talented.

"He has got all of the attributes you need to be a success at a major club like Rangers and I am sure he'd do well there.

"He has another 10 years at least at the highest level. If he joined Rangers he wouldn't be playing in the lower leagues forever."

Two questions, what age is Murphy?

'Murphy, who was linked with a move to the club he supported as a boy at the start of last season'

    And

Don't you think the writer is playing fast and loose with ther term 'Ace' when describing Bob Malcolm.

I'm going to regret this but I have to ask, if his contract expires in the summer and Rangers cannot sign free agents until 1 September 2013 or actually sign and play them until January 2014, do you think Murphy will see out his contract in June 2013 and wait until September to sign for Rangers, then wait another 3 months to play?

Maybe he will, who knows and fair do's to him if he is willing to sacrifice 6 months of his career playing the waiting game.

Maybe i'm missing a trick but is there any other way he could do it? Sign a 6 month contract with someone else and see it out then join Rangers?

Still, he'd be a good addition to the squad in 13 months time.

Well he could always be allowed to use Murray Park.

I'm fairly sure theres **** that could be done if he was to train with us until he was able to sign for us. He'd just get a decent signing bonus I'd guess - again **** all wrong with that.

That's a lot of ifs though and also, **** you.

Why wouldn't he be allowed to play until January 2014, I thought we could sign players from September 2013?

    23.

    No.

Why would he have to wait until January 2014?

If his contract expires in the summer, he can still train with Rangers (Boyd & Miller this week).

When the transfer embargo is lifted we can sign players again, Murphy would of course be a free agent so does not matter if it falls outside of the transfer window.

Would he be willing to not play football for what a month to get a deal with Rangers?

    I would think so.

I'll answer you because you seem to be the only one who's not acting like a ****er over a straightforward question.

S far as i'm aware you can register players on September 1, but they can't play until January 2014.

I did not provide "facts", that's why I asked a question.

The transfer window closes on 31 August but Murphy will be a free agent so I suppose Rangers can sign him on September 1.

The transfer window usually closes on the 31st of August but now that it falls on the weekend it has been said that it will be open until Monday September 2nd.

They could close it early on the Friday night but I'm pretty sure they have pushed it forward on occassions rather than back.

Because this is at least the 3rd article Medro has written about Players who Rangers could sign, no one seems to actually know WHEN you can sign players.

    Case in point.

So are you pretty sure or positive? Is it September or January 2014, that's all I asked. No agenda.

I've looked this up as I've known the window to be extended over the weekends.

So no we couldn't sign him, however it wouldn't matter what so ever because we can sign free agents at any date (after the transfer ban)

So in this case we could sign him if we wanted before January but as far as I can tell we won't be able to sign anyone from other clubs until January 2014.

See I'm not just a pretty face.
