Fair cop, I didn't spot 'hatred' in your definition. I'll explain why it is a little xenophobic then: by focussing on the success of English players the article is by implication diminishing the achievements of other nationalities.

I don't agree that you have not attacked anybody, you said I am more twitchy than Harry Redknapp and accused me of starting 'racist-related arguments' and you called FLT's suggestion 'silly'.

Listen fella - if you read my post i said that ' IMO it is silly to suggest that this article is xenophobic '. IMO stands for In My Opinion. Just as you have an opinion, so do i. I will repeat - in no way do i see this by definition a xenophobic article. This is not belittling anybody - you are belittling yourself by posting such a daft statement. As another poster has suggested a few of you on here are too bloody twitchy when anything apertaining to pride in something or somebody English is mentioned.

Come on mate it is self-evidently belittling to call someone silly. We've all done it but you can't say you're not belittling anyone. Just accept that some people don't agree with you and that doesn't automatically make them 'daft' or 'twitchy'.

Oh and maybe you can look up apertaining for us in that dictionary of yours <laugh>

Because xenophobia implies an an irrational 'dislike or fear' of people from other countries. There's a difference between observing and disliking. I think it's an interesting statistic.

Indeed. People just love trying to find a subliminal message in the most innocent of things. Makes me feel a bit tired some days.
Oh look, too many English players, perhaps they are a bit xenophobic.

    The article is xenophobic?! <laugh>

When newspapers talk about players in England contention due to stats in future they should also include all the foreign players too....

But seriously, people are looking for something which simply is not there.

Can't believe a harmless, mildly interesting stat has ruffled so many feathers.

That article could be read as nationalistic, and nationalism can be divisive and at worst morally violent. However it was a football article with the perfectly legitimate intention of conveying the scoring ability of english footballers.

To say that it diminishes the achievements of other nationalities is one of the stupidest things I have ever read.

It is good to see some common sense comments on here this morning about this very simple but quite interesting article.
Some of the guys who post on this site are so - to use Frans description which is quite apt - twitchy when anything relating to racial matters comes up. This article wasnt in the slightest xenophobic but some of them couldnt resist suggesting it was. This is a website so it would be quite easy to just ignore the post - but it involved Saints players and as i am a Saints fan and this is a Saints fans site and i live in England, i felt that it needed some balance to this disturbing comment ref xenophobia.
The original poster FLT is in my view a sensible poster and i usually enjoy his comments ref Saints & football in general, and i would like to be able to disagree without him on this issue without falling out. PTF always has a go at me when i try to put my view across especially with regard to the seemingly non-stop racial related events in the football media lately, boardering on hysteria - his superiority complex is laughable.

You are so right. I have been worried for some time that the royal family is institutionally rascist as none of them are from an ethnic minority community and unlike the USA who have a black head of state I can't see the UK being so egalatarian ever. We need a black king or queen sometime soon for the sake of racial harmony and we should start moving that way by setting up an inquiry into the lack of opportunity for ethnic minorities to put forward candidates and have them accepted as prospective royalty.

it's just typical of your sort to focus on ethnicity. when are we going to see a transvestite queen on the throne?

Honestly I've never seen such a defensive response to any comment I've made on here, and this is hardly one of the more contentious ones! Some people are a bit too defensive about race I'd suggest (which by the way I have not mentioned). I've explained what I meant and nobody has addressed that point, it seems like you're all just reading what you want to read.

What if a newspaper ran a piece about specifically the greatest white players or the greatest male businessmen? This is less serious than that but really it's along similar lines.

What if they ran an article about how many english players had scored in the premier league? That would piss me right off.

Very funny mate. I have said more than once I don't think this is a massive issue, merely that I could see FLT's point. It was a throwaway comment about something I care very little about, but the caustic reception my comments got have drawn me into responding. Now does anyone have anything constructive to say?
