I weep for our nation, I really do. A mother and daughter, both looking like Crystal Meth rejects, just hurling vile insults at each other.

It's like some sort of macabre zoo, that show.

I wonder if our Morgan speaks French with a Hampshire accent. I somehow can't imagine him saying nipper or mush. If Morgan has acquired a local accent do you think he sounds a bit like Mike Channon? (yes I know Channon is of good Wiltshire stock)

The foreign lads at Liverpool/Everton sound strange. Scouse is obviously contagious. Hope they keep Ricky away from Gaston...doesn't bear thinking about!

I was watching cricket highlights earlier (no surprise there) and listening to Ian Healy's usual one eyed comments, I wondered how the very strong Australian accent came to be.

It doesn't seem to have any connection to any English dialect that I can think of, so I'm stumped!

So much love for Trackmania. May start playing that in lectures instead of FM.

Have to say I'm surprised reading that. Would've thought he'd be a player who'd stay to fight for his place. We could do with a player like him holding our midfield together.

Perhaps, but he was fighting for his place last season and for a lot of the season our first choice pairing was Cork and Morgan. In pre-season JWP was getting much more game time and Ramirez was always going to be ahead of him in midfield. Oh and Davis is ahead of him too. At 29 he must have decided that he wasn't going to get regular football, and if that's what he wanted then fair enough. He would have gotten some appearances when Cork was out, but still only as a late sub. I just think it's a shame that we as saints fans didn't get the chance to thank him for what he did for us. He lifted our first trophy in over 30 years and captained our back to back promotion winning teams. He will always have a big place in saints history.

I saw a programme on dialects. Apparently, accents change with time...you would realise this if you have ever heard early recordings of Londoners. However, changes are less in colonies for some reason. Therefore, the accent in colonies, like Australia and the USA, will bear a closer relationship to the English accent at the time of colonization than the present day accent in the home country. Also depends on the county of origin of original colonizers and their social status (many being uneducated low level criminals in Australia's case). A similar study in New York (heavily Irish influenced) revealed dialect drift, but started from an Irish accent rather than an English one. It was a fascinating programme as it showed that language can reveal the move of modern humans from Africa to Europe via Asia.

Such people have always existed, but in the past they never mixed with normal people. Now they are in our face...giving them the opportunity to reveal their stupidity and vileness to a wider audience is the equivalent of visiting mental asylums for entertainment in the 18th century.

In fairness to Barton if someone like Schneiderlin spoke French with a Hampshire accent it would be easier for me to translate. This is what Barton is doing. By speaking English in a French accent he's making it easier for the French to translate it. It actually makes sense

I think we all go to Pidgen English when talking to foreigners...Barton was also probably trying to level out his own accent. Very funny though...specially the dropped aitches.

Oh Fran you very naughty person. Many people were sent to Australia for doing nothing more than doing what Oliver twist did and saying I am bloody hungry.

A bit of light reading for you would be Captain Swing by Eric Hobspawn and George Rude, Swing Unmasked edited by Michael Holland and Hampshire Machine Breakers by Jill Chambers.

Perhaps you should also reread Engels' "The Condition of the Working Class in England in 1844 ".

One of my ancestors, a Berkshire yeoman farmer who could read and write was sentenced to 10 years transportation for trying to stop deer ruining his crops.

That's why I said low level criminals, Godders. Knew many wouldn't be considered criminals now.

He's speaking to journalists, all of whom can speak English. They would just have a translator otherwise.

I know. I'm talking about the public. If they watch his interview it will be much harder for them to understand in his normal voice.

Well, I don't fully understand it yet but it's a massively multiplayer FPS set in the future during a huge war between free factions, The Terran Republic (fascist scientists), the New Conglomerate (hippy-freedom fighter types) and the other faction I can't remember but they're kind of cultist types. Basically each faction tries to capture territory from the opposition but rather than just being flags or control points like in TF2 for example, you have to capture facilities somehow (I haven't quite worked that out, although I have been involved in some captures) but a facility will often change hands.

You get vehicles but rather than just spawning from a particular location, you buy them with resources you accumulate from general battle experience based on the territories you hold/what territory you're in (it wasn't quite clear). Once you buy a vehicle, the main slot (driver's slot) can only be used by you but other people can be passengers or use the secondary weapons. If you leave it unattended for 5 minutes, it blows up or something (I dunno, I wasn't around to see what happens, either way it's not there anymore)

You get various classes (medic, engineer, light infantry, heavy assault) and can unlock abilities and upgrades using cert points, though I'm not 100% how these accumulate. Also you can unlock a variety of different weapons (even for medics!) but I can't remember what they cost, I know you can use credits bought from real money to unlock them, but I think you can also buy them using cert points possibly, but they cost a fair amount (though of course, far fewer credits).

The battles themselves are quite intense and have loads of people in, and even when you're some distance from the front line, you get the feeling of being part of a bigger battle as in the distance you'll be able to see explosions and tracer fire and hear the thuds from the large cannon which you can find in places. When using the cannon, you usually have to arc your fire to get increased range (it's like archery!). It's also one of those games where you've gotta stick together with your team, if you go solo, guns blazing you'll probably get killed very quickly. Needless to say, I am rubbish and only managed 5 kills to about 35 deaths, however I got quite a few kill assists. Annoyingly on the online stats at least, they don't show them. It would make my stats look a lot better! But yeah, considering it doesn't cost anything (though you can pay for optional extras), it's not bad!

When they watch it on TV, it will be translated for them anyway, just like it is here.
