Cheers 247! About 20 seconds ago on the Chelsea thread I posted that yours was post of the week! Interesting that you have a go at me but not Staines who expressed the same sentiment. Check out the first sentence of my post again would you?
I know, I've just seen that and responded there too. I had only read your comment, not Staines', when I began writing my response. Yes, you say it's wrong to begin with but then try to justify it?? Also, you have more of a history with this sort of thing than Staines does. For what it's worth, I apologise for the "Cun7" remark I shouldn't stoop that low.
That's a fair point. Na I ain't justifying it, just advocating some personal responsibility that's all. Playing devil's advocate as it were. I thought the Cu*t jibe was very good!
Sorry 247 but this 'huge' Jewish support has been proved to be a myth (in a recent report I think it was put at no more than 3-4 % Jewish following at Tottenham). So therefore it must be a large number of non-Jews calling themselves 'Yids'. Is that acceptable ?? Personally I think not. It's on par with me supporting a team with a strong Afro-Carribian background and calling my supporters group 'n***** Army'. Totally wrong IMO on both counts
Not sure where that report came from, I used to go to White Hart Lane a lot as a youngster (I got free tickets for home games and would go when QPR were playing away) and unless the demographic has changed a lot in the past 20+ years there was an awful lot more Jewish fans than 3-4%. Also, the club has been in the hands of Jewish families for a lot of its history. However, I would agree that there must be a large proportion of the fans that call themselves "Yid's" who are not Jewish. However, forgive me if I'm wrong, I'm not Jewish so don't know for sure but doesn't the word Yid come for the Yiddish language that literally means "Jewish"? That being the case the fans are just embracing the fact that they are "Jewish"? Yes, it was originally used as an anti-semitic term but has been adopted by the club as a badge of honour. I'm not saying that there aren't a section of the fans that aren't particularly comfortable with it but I think your analogy is a bit of a stretch.
It's not a tiny percentage, it's a large percentage and the other fans are embracing the fact the club has always had a history of Jewish ownership and support. They see being called "Yid's" or "Yid Army" as a badge of honour. However, it doesn't matter how many supporters are Jewish it does not give West Ham supporters the right to use the Holocaust in such a disgusting way.
Jewish, Muslim, Christian, Catholic.........it doesn't matter, they are all worshiping a God that doesn't exist. Believe in Science, you'll be much better off.
Sorry mate i can't remember where i read the report but will try to look it up. The FA have been on a big campaign at the moment (backed by the comedian David Baddiel) on the use of the word 'Yid' and how, in their opinion, it is unacceptable, in whatever context. I do get your point about the literal meaning of the word, but then you could say the literal meaning of the word 'Paki' is a shortened version of the country Pakistan. Still an insult ??. Really there isn't a right or wrong answer just opinions on the subject. And i guess mine and Swords opinion are that is is wrong. And to be fair the analogy wasn't of my making, but of Mr Baddiel himself.
I'm certain we all agree with that 247. No right thinking person would dispute that. Nevertheless, the term "Yid" is used as an offensive term to describe Jewish people in the same way that the "N" word is used to denigrate people of African origin. As Staines said above, if a Club had Afro-Carribean roots and a big bunch of the fans (perhaps most of them white) hung huge banners calling themselves "N***** army" , do you not think they'd be inviting abuse from some crazy fans from other Clubs? Still, the SBL wading into this controversy only adds fuel to the fire. They are a real bunch of trouble makers. I listened to a guy on the radio the other day who's just written a book (can't think of the name right now) about how the well educated class are picking on football fans in a snobby way of belittling them and labelling them all racists etc. He made some fantastic points.
Point out where I mentioned religion once on this thread please. That's feeble even by your standards you eejit
Out of order Cerny, Swords hasn't insulted at all on this thread. In fact he has lead to some very interesting debate. Apologies should be in order IMO
Don't mind him Staines. He's been busting a gut to get me permanently banned since I returned but his efforts are so lame! Must try harder Cerny son!
