Just seen this on NewsNow and thought it was pretty funny considering they were aiming for Europe (apprently)

SUNDERLAND boss Steve Bruce will be asking owner Ellis Short for a major cash injection this summer to bolster his squad.

The Black Cats boss started the year agreeing with chairman Niall Quinn that the club was reaching the stage where it would only be looking for two or three quality signings every transfer window from now on.

But a winter of discontent, with the squad wrecked by injuries and the defection of Darren Bent, has led to such a major slump that Bruce recognises means the squad is likely to need a massive overhaul this summer.

Money doesn't buy success. We have barely spent anything recently and we are doing very well. Also, just look at Everton, they spend next to nothing and have been doing well for years!

Yes, of course they should. I still think they will but it won't be by the massive margin their deluded fans were claiming at the start of the season, they are light years ahead remember. £2m for Perch, £3.5m for Tiote, Lovenkrands on a free but he always pretty much already here and Ben Arfa but he has barely played.

Spending £5.5m compared to god knows what they spent then we have technically had a more successful season than them, and even if they do finish above us, I still believe it has been a more successful season for us.

Ya, they wasted a lot of money on the salaries of heartless, temporary loan players. Sunderland's in serious trouble if they don't fill some serious gaps with permanent players.

Oh, and Gyan's proof of why not to buy a striker on the back of a decent WC performance who'd never even set Ligue 1 alight.

to be honest i said at the start of the season i'd be happy with the toon finishing 17th and beating the drop and i'd be happy with that don't give a **** if they finish above us or not staying up is all that counts and it looks 99.9% job done

    would be funny though

I think it's in the region of £70 million Brucie has spent since he's been there, so you'd think they'd be higher up than us.
They can keep blaming it on injuries, if that's the case maybe they need to try looking closer to home for their problem. I seem to remember we had a similar problem with high numbers of injuries.

Although we are only above them by goal diffrence, I still think we will finish above them considering they have no fit strikers last time I heard and they also have West Ham and Wolves to play.

Granted we have strikers and they are ****, I can see us at least getting some kind of results.

As mentioned; money doesn't buy you success.

Invested wisely by a good manager will usually assist in the money attaining more success though and that is where their problem lies.

    Bruce.

He struggled at Wigan in the second half of the season, he struggled at Birmingham in the second half of the season and lo and behold; Sunderland struggle in the second half of the season.

    Bruce needs to go.

Their injuries are self-inflicted, they seem to occur always on their home pitch.

It also shows their stupidity at not replacing Bent, they had two weeks to do so, we had a few hours.

I do believe they will spend again(not as much as it is quite clear Ellis Short is getting pissed off) but on what? Their fans keep linking themselves to the likes of Chamakh, he has been **** but is still too good for them, and no poolie_mackem, Mancini will not be your new manager if Bruce leaves! The quality that they will sign will be similar to ours.

I don't want him to go. I like his style... as long as it's not at Newcastle.

If Sunderland want to improve overall with the money they have to spend then they have to get a new manager. Kinnear is available.

At the start of the season I said I would be happy with 17th. if the Mackems get 16th so be it and I think Bruce is doing a grand job at Sunderland.

They should be extremely embarrassed if they don't finish above us.

We only signed 5 players to add to our Championship winning side, and if you look at them:

    Gosling, free and hasnt played.
Ben Arfa, 5.5mil and played 2 and a bit games.
Campbell, free, 4 appearances, and was detrimental to us.
    Tiote, only cost 3.5mil.
Perch, 1mil and no real impact, cant imagine Raylor would have been worse if we played him RB.

Meanwhile they spent 20mil(?) on a side who had been up for 4 years.

when you look at it like that, when it's mathematically certain we're safe everyone at the club deserves a massive pat on the back for this season. And lets face it, the mackems were only ever gonna be on top for a while, we've heard it all before: peter reid gonna take us to where we should be (he did) roy keane the man to lead us to glory (he wasn't) and then brucie and his I-pod are gonna take us charging into europe. We've had a blip but those morons will ALWAYS be playing catch-up
