Former Chelsea boss Roberto Di Matteo, 42, is tipped to replace Nigel Adkins as manager of struggling Southampton. The Italian is a close friend with chairman Cortese and will step in if Adkins is given the boot This by mirror (Sunday)
I swear papers have some running joke about calling literally every Italian man a "close friend" of Cortese.
Tbh, one of my first thoughts was that Roberto Di Matteo would end up linked to Saints after his sacking at Chelsea. In fact, I believe the thought first crossed my mind when the first rumours of Di Matteo being under pressure came about. The newspaper media are desperate for **** to happen. Obviously sales are down.
Just adding disparate facts together (we are in bottom three and di Matteo is Italian and available) and taking a wild leap into the wide blue yonder. Fills the paper and no one will question it or remember it in the future. At some point they will be correct about such a wild surmise and announce that they were correct.
What an absolute joke. Now that Redknapp is no longer available for them to speculate, they turn to Di Matteo instead.
Nigel came out yesterday and said he hoped to be here for 10-15 years. Now whilst that won't necessarily happen, there must have been something positive that made him come out and say such a thing.
If that happened I think Cortese will have lost the plot. I would think Di Matteo would be more likely.
