This popped up as part of an earlier tread with one of those annoying hull yokes. Made me think. Leeds have a massive global support. That's a fact. Personally I've supported the Whites since 1970, as a 9 year old watching them in the FA cup final. That started my love affair with all things Leeds. I've spent a fortune traveling to whatever games I can afford with my three daughters. Some seasons, to , three games, other years maybe only one. Depends on budget, travelling for Ireland and paying for three or four ain't cheap. But we've been to top premiership clashes and div 1 games versus Colchester etc. my question is, should I be regarded any less of a supporter than those who may live five miles from Elland road and attend a half dozen games a year. God knows I'd love to live that close. I don't think I'm any more or less a supporter. That's what makes Leeds great for me, we're sort of an extended family scattered across the world. I doubt if Hull or the likes have ever had a plastic supporter to worry about by the way, so I wouldn't worry about their definition of one
Of course you're not less of a supporter. We don't all live close enough to Elland Road and/or have the money to attend regularly.
Driving up the M1 today I saw coaches of Surrey Whites, Essex Whites, Nottingham Whites etc. Very passionate fans, loyal, only clubs in the higher echelons of the game can command that sort of support
If you do actually attend games, or have in the past then I certainly would not consider you as a plastic. Same as I am not a plastic, I watched City for nearly 30 years, following them all over the country, before I left the UK. Plastics are those that have never attended a single game in their life and I do not accept the "I support a team because my dad does" argument unless they physically go to the games
I would tend to agree with you, I have been called a plastic before (I don't get too affected by it, I know who I support and I give my utmost). I used to attend at the very least once a month travelling from London before I left England. Even now, when I go back to england I make sure that I get in at least 2 games while I'm there. In Australia, I watch every single game on tv regardless of the time and other events I have going on at the same time, I listen to every other game on the radio (barring a few when I need sleep because they are generally start at 1:00am). If you are travelling all that way Eire, then I would say your not a plastic. Thats whats great about Leeds United, not only do they have a global support, the support is globally loyal and committed
Ditto, 2.45am start for me on Thursday for our game with Saints, although I only get to see live streams here as I cannot find anywhere that shows the games with English commentary.
Then you are a fan. The clue is in the title. To be a supporter you need to support. To support you must be making a supportive contribution. Plastic supporter = Sheldon Lives close enough, can afford to go, claims not going cos of Bates, still not going after T/O completed and worst of all, just moans and moans...
If you pick a club you've no connection to because they're having some success, you're a plastic. In such cases, the cost of travel's irrelevant.
Controversial but I understand the point you are trying to make. Someone born in Southampton and chooses to support Liverpool for instance..if they are regular followers of them I have no real issue with them. They are glory hunters for sure (or were some years ago) but I still wouldn't pigeon hole them as "plastics".
I know what you're saying. There is a distinction between a glory hunter and a plastic, but for me, generally speaking, (there'll be exceptions) picking a club you've no connection to is not the action of a proper club football fan anymore than you can pick your international team.
The 12,000 figure's obviously bollocks, but I know of several people first hand that swapped clubs when we went up and have swapped back now we've gone down. They are without a doubt plastic and not club football fans. I guess there's some consolation in that at least, for a short time, they realised what they've lacked from not following their local team. The feelings us long term fans felt will never be known to these lesser types. However, I think the question's more about people latching on to clubs they've no connection to. I genuinely pity these types. They tend to get angry when it's pointed out because deep down, they must know.
Another night that now brings a shiver to the spine came just the week before that Whitby game â Hull City 2 â 0 Torquay United. Not a particularly memorable night you might think, a clean sheet for Roy Carroll and so on, but it was of course infamous as Cityâs lowest ever attendance for a league match. The fact that I can recall the attendance being 1,775. big plastic city is hull.funny how 20,000 of them claim to have been 1 of the 1,775.
I guess you not being a proper football fan, the distinction between crowds fluctuating with success and sad deluded types hoping that latching on to what they perceive as success even though they've no association to it will fill the void in their personality is lost on you.

I was actually at the lowest gate we had, which isn't the one you quote, but that proves **** all and is nothing to do with the topic at hand. As you've quaintly shown, sad sacks that latch on to a club in the hope of vicarious success struggle to be a part of discussions between proper football fans. All you've done is try (and fail) to throw sill insults in the hope it diverts the topic from your inadequacy. The question I suppose is, when is it acceptable to simply choose a club you've no connection to over one that you do?
I have yet to meet a Scum fan that's been to Old Trafford. Does my flipping head in!! "How long you been following ManUre?" "Oh, about twelve years now." "You must have seen some good games at Old Trafford then, like Mourinho's Porto knee slide, or Beckford's goal?" "Erm, no, never seen them play live. Don't need to anyway, can see all their games on the box." Just pathetic!!
Distance is irrelivant as is any connection a plastic is a fan who only goes in the good times and disappears in the bad.A real fan is there good or bad.Do you believe the best man is 1 that shags his sister as she's the nearest girl he has a connection to ?.
