It seems like a mountain to climb, as such, I firmly believe that we need others to fail spectacularly around us.

The only credible finishing scenario is below:

    QPR
    Aston Villa
    Reading
    Southampton

I cannot see us overtaking Sunderland, Wigan, Norwich and Swansea.

    Anyone else think otherwise?

I think Wigan and Norwich will be right there at the end of the season too.

Definitely think you could add Sunderland to that list - even Wigan aren't safe IMO. Don't know where we'll finish, but the next two games are gonna be vital.

Reading, So'ton, Wigan, Villa, Sunderland - and may be even Norwich, just based on their goal difference?

Maybe everybody are getting ahead of themselves on this post, I for one really believe that the damage has already been done by Hughes and his incompetence. Harry will truly be performing a miracle if we stay up now, sorry to be a damp squib but one decent 60 mins today against Manure doesn't guarantee wins against Sunderland nor Villa. We are in the **** up to our necks!. However, there is no one out there that I believe can get us out of it other than Redknapp. Gonna be a long season come Tuesday!

It's a discussion about hypothetical scenarios for goodness sake! We all realise that this performance doesn't guarantee anything.

Harry should give one of the teams that will be fighting relegation with us, (Anton for free)

We've already played the three promoted sides at home, that should be a nailed on 9 points, but we only took one point, so that makes things even harder for us. It really is going to be a tall order to get out of the brown stuff but I think we can top Reading and Saints and one team always has a dip in the second half of the season...

I think we should sign the best two players from the four teams above us.

Seriously though, there are always a few teams that seem to plummet during the season. When they do, we need to find some form to apply some pressure on them. Hopefully Harry can do that. Although what worries me is Cisse. We need him to go out there all guns blazing but he has been truly shocking up until now. How can you not get yourself up for a game at OT? If Harry can sort out the defence and get Cisse going, we stand half a chance.

Agreed sku. Villa the one to catch, although Southampton & Reading no doubt have the same gameplan. Going to come down to who's got the biggest cojones for a scrap..

Being optimistic Villa, Reading and Stoke. Saints look a good mid-table side to me.

1.5 points per game and still only gets us to 40 points!. We will need to beat some of the big teams to have a chance....as well as the 6 pointers...scary

    Agree with this completely.

Human psyche of football fans means that everyone sees current form and that alone.

It always looks like the team that wins the first few games will absolutely win the league and the first few to get cast adrift are certain failures.

Never quite happens that way (top teams are more predictable) and someone drops like a stone without warning.

Agree with posters above that see Saints, Reading, Villa and maybe Norwich below us - but we have to get going like right now

Theres no way Norwich will be in a relegation scrap. Personally i dont think we will get anymore than 25pts this season after the start weve had so we are down if thats the case. To join us 2 from Saints, Reading, Sunderland and Villa. Im sure things will improve under Harry but Hughes had assembled such a poor squad and from our position and seeing how tough it is to win games at this level its going to need a miracle for us to survive.

You simply have to win at Sunderland or against Villa.Failure to beat one or the other will leave you too far adrift of fourth bottom.

Well for all the 'for goodness sake brigade out there' we have already been humiliated by Swansea, Southampton, Reading at home, got a lucky draw at Norwich, gave away a two goal lead at Villa last year, lost at Wigan, who IMO are a better team this year so that leaves Sunderland who everyone thought would a top 10 team this year. They are having a bad run just like us but then so were Southampton when they played us and looked what happened there. Our home form has been **** what on earth makes anyone think that our Achilles heel of playing away will save us this year. I wanted Hughes out ages ago but it never happened but he's gone now and Harry has a monumental task ahead of him, I know this is a discussion about who we really think could finish below us but at this moment until we get our first WIN and go on a run the only teams that will finish below us will remain in the Championship.

I think everyone knows the odds are stacked against us but it basically comes down to 2 choices:-

    1) Accept that we're down already and spend the next 8 months gloomily waiting for the Championship to start.

    2) Dare to believe that an escape might be possible and perhaps, just perhaps, derive some enjoyment from the rest of the season.

Personally prefer option 2 no matter how deluded but if I was adamant about option 1 then I'd leave people to their deluded states rather than constantly raining on their parades.
