Now I'm not saying that Guardiola would 100% succeed in the premiership, but how many people gave the same odds on Wenger succeeding? And he came from the J league. The Barcelona team that he got together will be regarded as one of the all time best, and maybe the best so far. How many current managers can boast such a feat? At the end of the day, give the man the credit he deserves for achieving more than most in such a small amount of time.
Even if theoretically a manager has 'everything in place' he still has to have the respect of the players and be able to do a good job. You can look at it 2 ways, Barca have flattered Guardiola as a coach and he is not really one of the best managers in the world but was made to look so by the team he inherited. Or it's that he installed an even bigger desire to win in an already good side? I go for the latter. The fact that he has made it look so easy is testament to his ability. Sometimes sides with so many starts can implode if under the wrong management but he kept them stable and concentrated on winning.
You could argue that Wenger had everything in place when he took over, but it's down to what the manager does with his resources that matters. Wenger made some changes and made them a great team during his early years. To get things in perspective, he inherited a great keeper, defense and some great attacking players. He just added his own recipe to the mix. Same way that Guardiola did with Barcelona. Yes he inherited Messi, Iniesta and Xavi, but he still had to get them together to play as a team. Take a look at Man City and what Mancini is doing. On paper, they have a great squad, a squad that is the best in the league, but does that reflect in their results and the way they play? The answer is no. They went down the wire last season with a weakened and inferior Man U and got easily knocked out in the Champions league, in two consecutive years.
When Wenger took over half of our players were still going out and getting pissed up after the game. They were all eating bangers and mash and smoking big fat Havana cigars (I might have made that last bit up)
Exactly my point, he came in and made the difference. They were already great players, but needed the right guidance.
I think over the last 11 seasons we've had some great first 11s but when a few injuries began to creep in we didn't have the squad to cope with it.
If he has the same constraints as Wenger what would bringing Guardiola achieve? All he has in his CV is taking over a super-star team, add more super-stars while managing it and win trophies with a stable super-star team. Why the **** is he such highly rated because of that? I think he should prove himself elsewhere. When Wenger goes he has to leave a strong team behind, or no other manager can improve within the same constraints.
Agreed I think the problem at Arsenal lies with the board for not spending enough money on the squad. If Guardiola came in now, he'd have exactly the same problems as Wenger to deal with.
I do blame Arsenal for not bringing in a replacement for Song in the summer. Whether it was Wenger or the board that decided to stick with Diaby in the hope he wouldn't get injured, it was a ****ing negligent decision. I'm hoping that this defeat today will convince the board and the manager to SPEND SOME ****ING MONEY IN JANUARY.
I like Guardiola. But if anybody thinks that the answer is simply replacing Wenger with him at this stage without an overhaul of our squad is in the realms of the Fairies. What we need is for the board to recognise that this squad needs some money spent on it to bring in players of the same calibre as Cazorla. We desperately need a DM and we could also do with a LB and another striker. If the board give Wenger the money to buy top quality players, then I think he's still the man to take us forward. That said, if Guardiola came out and said he wanted to manage Arsenal, I'd be excited by that. Also Fabregas is a massive fan of Guardiola, maybe his first signing could be Cesc . . . ?
Well the main thing about getting someone like Giaurdiola in is ambition. Wenger is happy running this 'project' while making money through constant player sales for the board. To Wenger its also a matter of ethics - you can see the guy is unhappy with the crazy money spent in modern football. Someone more ambitious though, like Giaurdiola,Mourinho or Klopp would not accept this. They would only take the Arsenal job if the full resources were available to them.
Well, that's the point really. In order for that to happen the board would have to change tact on spending. If they released the purse strings for Wenger, then I think he could do as good job as anybody we could bring in.
I try and post sensible things on this board all about football and piskie just deletes it i,m sure its because i am a stoke city fan but believe me i come in peace, i think your fine club would do well with huth and shawcross, lets forget the ramsey incident for a minute. Wenger as lost the plot at your fine club and needs to go if pep did take over and purchased shawcross how would you lot feel, no abuse please just asking a question and piskie i,m not here to wum.
Wenger bought a lot of the average players we see on display, so your argument fails, Wenger is the problem, and he needs to **** off with the average players he's bought. 10 million for Gervinho? Are you ****ing having a laugh? And you say it's not Wenger's fault?
