Did you know that Saints' all time total number of league points collected is currently 2 less that Pompeys! a good reason to win on Saturday!!! Pompey are bound to lose their remaining games! Pompey are 62nd, played 3593 with 3983 points Saints are 63rd, played 3525 with 3981 points http://www.statto.com/football/stats/england/all-time-table I was disappointed to see Saints so low down, but how come Saints are older than our rivals but played less games? anyway, 2 points to make up, but 68 games in hand = Saints are the top team in Hampshire!!! (Note: Bournemouth [Dorset] in 55th place????? We have 118 games in hand but 194 points behind!) COYS
I'm guessing the less points and less games has something to do with so long spent in the top flight in recent years and therefore less games played? or even due to the Southern League etc in our very early years? I'm still a relatively young football fan so i'm sure this one has come up before and has an easy answer...... I agree though, it would be good to get remove that 2 point gap this weekend!
You would have expected a team that has played more games than you to be higher in points wouldn't you.....68 to be exact....That equates to nigh on a season and a half!! You can look at it another way....Pompey games average per game 1.10 based on 3593 games. Saints average per game 1.12 based on 3525 games. At that rate Saints would have managed 4057 points for the same number of Pompey games. Puts it a bit more into prospective then doesn't it?
Sorry about this, but it's FEWER points, not less points! I mean, you wouldn't say Pompey was a fewer team than Saints, would you? But they are definitely a lesser team!
Thanks for pointing out my lazy grammatical error at stupid o'clock last night. Maybe as you're on another intellectual plane than the rest of us you can also easily answer why our rivals, and some of the league leading teams, have played so many more games even though we are quite an old club in our own right?
There are only 38 Premier league games in a season compared to 46 in League 1, therefore every season spent in the highest division means you have eight fewer games to accumulate points.
A pretty meaningless statistic really as we are rarely playing in the same division. The number of points in the top division would be a better statistic.
OMG - what a useless stat (yes, stat)! Maybe if it was done on time spent in same leagues with same sides in them................oh, hang on a sec
