We stayed up with him as manager. At the time, I and most others thought he was the right man for us. Its interesting Warnock now saying he should never have been sacked: in other words that he could have kept us up. Not sure about that, but also not sure we stayed up because Hughes was manager either. We stayed up inspite of him, for the reasons outlined by brix. Thats become clear this season, when he's bought the wrong players and failed to motivate the team. I don't know enough about football to comment on his tactics, but I've supported the R's for long enough to know when my team's got no heart, and for me that's his failing. He can't be a good manager if he can't motivate the team. Even I know that.

Perhaps, but we have to remember that Hughes brought in players who made a difference - Cisse's goals, Diakite - winner against Arsenal, Taiwo - smiles all round - would these blokes have joined for Warnock? He also got Adel playing again.

Just to be clear, the Warnock we are talking about is the 'championship promotion expert' who's current team the MASSIVE Leeds sit at 18th in the Championship, despite him having a free hand in the summer to load the squad with his favourite championship players?

Re Macintyre's piece in the OP, good stuff, but would have been more impressive published, say, last February. Plus our most successful ever manager in terms of top flight position, Dave Sexton, was an almost personality free zone, crippling lay shy in front of the cameras. Venables and Stock pretty big characters though.

Cheers SB. I don't remember Sexton and in my time our best managers have been Venables, Francis and Holloway - all had either personality or mullets, Hughes had neither. As for his January signings, didn't Cisse and Diakite both get sent off? twice? potentially costing us our premier league place had our 'championship' players not stepped up. Adel has been playing well, but as someone said the other day, when he's your most committed player you've got problems.
