Quite simply the most natural goalscorer of his generation. Had he been at a 'fashionable' southern club he would have played for England ... don't get me started on comparisons between him and Jimmy Greaves ..... Who (that is old enough) can remember him not once but twice having the best goalie in the World at the time (Gordon Banks) on his ar5e as he danced past him v Stoke in the FA Cup? 197 goals in 434 games. A proper legend. In recent times the nearest we had was Keithy Edwards.
Ye Happy Birthday Waggy. But seriously dont even mention him in the same breath as Jimmy Greaves. Waggy's our legend but he's not a national legend.
Nah dont think he was ever there Stan. Colin Hutton had that for years and years. Became Ali's Bar after that. Waggy had Golden Ball and then he was at a club in Hessle i think.
Might sound a bit obvious but wasn't actually called Waggy's and is now the Weir? Might be wrong mind.
No the one in Hessle, now, as has been pointed out. Weir Bar, down, appropriately The Weir, incidentally the place frequented by the much despised on here Jimmy Bullard, although I have to say I never saw him the few times I was there. Waggy was and always will be remembered as a talented footballer who should have gone on to greater things but for us in his day we were glad he didn't. Ably supported by our very own Chris Chilton who did move on but not with great success it has to be said another of the Hull City folk who did not get the recognition they deserved. Still, all the best to Waggy we could do with your kind today, along with Chris.
Can remember the Stoke game well. Waggy was fantastic, but liked his ale too much, according to Mansfield fans when we signed him. Chillo was as good- his record speaks for itself, but they had a hell of a partnership- great understanding between each other. Don't forget Houghton & Butler as well. Anyway happy birthday Waggy!
Yes happy birthday to him.Stoke,Chelsea Cup games.Remember at Huddersfield when City came out a young Huddersfield kid said to his Dad That Wagstaff is fat, the dad just said Maybe son but he is a bloody good player.48 years ago November 21 st 1964 made his debut against Exeter scoring in the 3-1 win, last game v Swansea in 1976. Not i am keeping tabs though. OiOiOi
Brilliant player, but daft as a brush. Drank too much, had a cig at half time, but still regularly outplayed the opposition. If only we'd had a few more Waggy's over the years.
Best inside forward I have seen at city, certainly gave me a lot of enjoyment in the sixties, as others have said pity we don't have a player like him just now. Happy birthday Waggy.
