Not too much to talk about but here is my write up Gillingham Vs Exeter 2012 So where do I start, well last night was not good at all, I am very unhappy with the result but we can’t start thinking that we have big problems as we should recover from this, so what did I think of the team well they were poor. Nelson 6- Goals not his fault, tried his hardest Fish 7- I think he was good; he was not at fault in my opinion, tried to get us into the game and also had 2 or 3 great shots. Barrett 5- This was not a good game at all for him, he was not good but he will play better. Davies 5- Not good, same as Barrett, poor game. Jackman 7- He was good getting forward, great goal he should stay in the team. Montrose 7- He was good at times, bad others, passing is always going to be a bit poor however with the poor passes also comes a great one and he had one or two of them which is good. He has upped his game though and works so hard. Whelpdale 7- Good to see him score, he worked and worked but it was not the best game he has had. Lee 4- Poor game looked right off his game and never got into it, good that we subbed him. Allen 5- Better than Lee but still not great, think he was just a tad rusty. Strevens 5- Not got much pace tried but did not work; I think he should be on the bench with Birchall starting. Burton 6- Worked hard but yet again not much pace and with a lack of pace upfront it was not going to work. Subs Weston 5- Tried but did not pay off, not a great game for him. Vincelot 4- He was poor, his header back to the defence could have gone badly wrong, and he was accident prone and could not pass like the rest of the team. Kedwell 6- Tried when he came on but did not pay off, shame he did not connect with the ball when it was in the air.
I reckon you got those about right Hoadie but in defence of Davies and Barrett they were often exposed by our out of sorts midfield.
Yeah not fully their fault, it was mainly due to them not heading the ball great but the weather did not help.
bristol407 You could do with being a bit more consistent - you agreed with Hoadie's summary - where he assessed Montrose as 7/10. In one of your posts you said that Montrose was the pick of the players ( yes, I realise that is being consistent )- yet here you are claiming that the midfield was out of sorts. ( I thought Montrose was meant to be one of those midfielders. ) How can you ( anyone ) defend his appalling distribution ? I haven't got a problem if people disagree with me - although I have read a lot on here & other forums to suggest that many are in tune with me - and I have said previously that disagreement can be healthy for the life of the forum. I try to give substance to my point of view - but I don't think that I contradict myself in the same way as your posts seem to conflict with themselves. And just in case you might think that I'm picking on you - Hoadie I thought that Davies was worthy of more than one of your lowest scores ( 5/10) - He put in some decisive challenges to stop a few very threatening situations, and deserved a better rating than Barrett - who also had an undistinguished game.
Hi .... Any individual's summary is going to be purely subjective and will not fit in with everyone else's perception of how the game goes. Between Hoadie's reports and those of BRB I reckon (going by other posts on here) that I get a balanced view of how the game went. I and other Gills fans working and living away from home for long periods welcome these reports as they offer an alternative to the biased 'Official site' write ups and the dry and boring BBC summaries. Hoadie and BRB are not paid, give their time freely and their passion shows through. At the risk of being patronising to Hoadie, he is a young lad learning his craft. Advice given should be looking to the positives and be encouraging, rather than negative and damning. Again this is my subjective viewpoint in an open forum. It will not sit 100% with others but, I hope, will not receive negative condemnation. Hoadie, no one's perfect.....keep up the good work. Cheers
WINDYROG It is interesting to read your post - which followed my latest offering. I was under the impression that nobody was being paid to appear in these forums. Hoadie has declared his youthful years - and attests to being passionate about his team - but that doesn't mean that anyone should be blind to the performance of their team, or individual performance of players - be that good as well as not so good. I would say that there are only a few people ahead of me who are more are able to back up their claim to be passionate about the Gills - in terms of travelling all over the country to see them play. Perhaps you'll say that is because I can afford the time & money ( but didn't Hoadie not bother to go to a home match ( £5 ) pre season when he doesn't have to travel 100 miles for a home match ( I know others travel further .) I am not condemning him for that - I appreciate that as a youngster he has to be practical with his cash. I don't condemn anyone else who contributes to this forum -differences of opinion often are the source of keeping up discussion -but I am pragmatic about the club I support. I have given low assessment to players such as Fish and Montrose, but I have also given both of them praise. However I am not going to make many excuses for any player having a poor performance in individual matches - Although I am frustrated when good performances cannot be replicated - I can excuse them in a little way - giving credit to the opposition for being better on the day. BUT I cannot tolerate any player not trying his best ( as I suggested in my condemnation of the attempt by Montrose as he back tracked during an attack by Exeter .) I actually relish the different viewpoint of fans on here - giving their valuable time to construct a reply rather than just viewing the posts. Maybe at times I can be a little too critical, but that is fuelled by any lack of committment by a player rather than his lack of ability. - but trust me, on Saturday every player will be cheered on by me at Accrington - as each start the game with a 'clean slate.'
Thanks for the kind words. TBH, I never feel offended if people give views to my reports. That is why they are there to create debate through the supporters eyes and not a journos. I never have much time for a lot of journalists but I always enjoy reading passionate supporters reports and responses. The only thing that does offend me slightly is if someone just contributes a pointless and effortless remark not relevant to the topic. Because I would hope that any contributors efforts are worth more than that. I hasten to add that comment is not aimed at or having a go at anyone on this thread. Anyway alwaysright how about you doing a type up in to a word doc for us sometime, I know you go to all the away games, so what else you got to do on those very long coach journeys home? Sleeeeeeeeep!
BRB thank you for your post and 'intervention' as I felt that 'Always' was getting a tad righteous. Does a person who goes to Church more than I do make them more of a Christian? It is not the outward displays of support and alignment that count, but what comes from the heart. I welcome both yours and Hoadie's contributions. Yours being the pragmatic and slightly dispassionate view and Hoadie's, the exuberant and sometimes blinkered view of excitable youth. They are both very relevant and I enjoy reading them. I sat up until 1230am (local time) watching 'Gills Live' and listening to it click away whilst in my cabin in the middle of nowhere, with a considerable storm going on outside knowing that I'd have to be up at 4.30am. To receive both your reports will never replace the feeling and atmosphere of being at the game live.......but it sure as hell comes close for me. So 'Always'.......I am fully aware that no one gets paid for their comments but don't knock someone for their honest endeavours unless you are prepared to post reports yourself. Whether we like it or not, youth is our future just as we were our father's. Give the lad some positive encouragement / feedback otherwise it will stifle his creativity and desire.....and we certainly need some of that in the world today. A Gills fan and passionate about them since 1966 when the World Cup opened up a whole new world for me.
I don't mind people saying anything about what I have to say as it is a debate and that is good as that is the purpose of writing a report no one is ever correct as you will always get people disagreeing I know I am not perfect and my view may not always be correct but that is my view. Just like to add ALWAYS I did go to a pre season game but only one of them as I would rather only to to league games as it is a waste of money to go to them all.
WINDYROG I didn't realise that I am meant to encourage any specific individual on this forum. I thought that we were all entitled to our opinion. I have tried to give mine with qualifications, rather than just make any unsubstantiated 'claim.' When I have disagreed with anothers' opinion I have tried to explain why - but I'm not here to make myself popular - just to give an honest opinion - even if that opinion might reveal uncomfortable truths about the Gills or any of the players - I don't believe in burying my head in the sand when there is a problem - I do not procrastinate. Unfortunately this is often mistaken for being righteous or pompous - but I am more than capable of making mistakes. With regards to Hoadie - or any other budding wannabe journalist - I have no interest in being his mentor - but I have stopped a long way from assassinating anything he has written ( let alone the grammar .) I will always accept what he writes, and occasionally offer comment. Others, such as the Rons of this world would probably not think twice to crucify in the same circumstances. I am not that heartless - but feel that Hoadie ( or whoever ) need to be realistic. I do feel a small sense of responsibility to point out the truth in as painless a way possible to people like Hoadie - otherwise a lack of guidance in these matters may cause him to be reckless in the 'real world' outside of GFC. Anyway - I feel for you - not being able to get to your place of worship - I nearly missed the start of Tuesdays service - I nearly had a nervous breakdown as I heard the ministers whistle as I entered the Church - where, this season I am hoping to witness a (second) league championship.
No one has suggested that Hoadie should be mentored, but he does offer another perspective to the available reports, which are few and far between. Not all Gills fans have the ability to attend many, let alone all games. There are plenty of us expat Gills fans around and 'Gills Live' on match days will verify that, so his reports are, in my opinion, a 'suitable' addition to those available. I am sure that your 'nom de plume' is tongue in cheek as no one is always right. So rather than having a 'pop' at those whose viewpoint does not tally with yours, give us all a match report. I am even prepared to afford you the same tolerance regarding incorrect grammar and punctuation as I do for Hoadie.
Always. Have a look at my post under the Montrose article where there was space to explain that imho Montrose was the pick of a poor midfield performance on Tuesday night. No inconsistency at all in my contributions on Montrose. He has had a month of great performances. Do not be put off by his unsure first touch and occasionally wayward passing. He is in that team to fullfil the hardest job of all which is to break down and harass the opposition midfield and he is the only one who does this effectively (with perhaps the exception of Charlie Lee when he is not being stupid, which is not very often).
WINDYROG 0f course my username is tongue-in-cheek. You say that I am having a 'pop' at dissenters to my viewpoint - isn't that what you're doing to me ? Isn't this frequently repeated by others - to each other in various forums ? - Thankfully without the associated foul language found in other forums. I haven't got a problem with those with differing viewpoints to myself. I have always tried to illustrate the reasons behind my thoughts. I also know that it is natural to accept criticism with great difficulty, and the truth with even greater difficulty. I am happy that you consider Hoadie's reports as suitable - perhaps a little more palatable than my reports - which are written without wearing rose tinted spectacles - I will give warts and all - wether or not it is suitable. I would like to take this opportunity to apologise to you for mistakes in my grammar. I obviously have much to learn... you see, English is not my first language, and it certainly appears that I am having difficulty in making myself understood. bristol407 Please do me the courtesy of accepting that I have praised Montrose more than once recently - as well as giving his performances my disapproval when it was warranted. I am not on a Montrose witchhunt. He receives the same support from me as any other player in the team ( otherwise, WINDYROG, I wouldn't go to all the games ) - but his performance is subject to the same scrutiny and honest opinion - which I'm hoping you might have regarding the frequency of his wayward passes. I know Montrose has had a good month ( I have posted praise on those occasions )- but that doesn't preclude him from criticism of any individual performance. I will agree with you regarding your sentiments of Charlie Lee, but still maintain my preference of Jack Payne to Montrose ( for all round ability.)
At least our ability to disagree is conducted with a consideration for manners. Let us hope for a match result worthy of a sparkling report from BRB tomorrow!
At Accrington? That's not going to happen WINDYROG. Although I am a season ticket holder, I have only done Barnet and AFC Wimbledon away this season, both courtesy of my friend alwaysright My next game is Fleetwood.
