I got a story about Batesy, kinda pointless but I'll tell it anyway.

When I was a kid I had a Chelsea mate who's dad used to be some kind of Chels exec. So they took me along for a day out to watch a friendly or some **** in the pre season. Pre match we were in this VIP-kinda room and Batesy was there. My mate was keen to say hello to him, so I went over with him.

At the time Chelsea had just signed Ruud Gullit, so being a 10 year old kid with nothing else to say to Bates, I asked him;
"What do you think about your new signing of Gullit"

Batesy just looked at me through his trademark ***** specs and said;
"What do I think? I think he's black"

I had no idea what to make of it as a kid, but my old man thought it was pretty funny

 

Bet he hasn't changed either.
