This! I hope he does well, I hope he pushes Button too, I don't want a repeat of 2011 where one driver gets a free pass!

I think Perez will come good again, he has done enough for me to prove that with the right managemnet he can deliver in a top team, whether he is a future WDC is another question.

On a selfish note, I hope he is fastest enough to push JB but not fastest enough to compromise strategies giving Jenson the optimum chance of competing for the WDC.

Similar to Massa and Alonso arrangement?

"Sergio, Jenson is faster than you, do you confirm?"
"I confirm, but tell him to do one!"

Perez is only 22, he was born in the 90's! (who now feels old?)
I know McLaren will get the best out of him and I think in the long run he'll turn out to be an excellent driver for Mclaren.

They are not exactly welcoming him in with open arms are they? Has all the hallmarks of Kovalainen again, guess we will have to wait and see but surprising to see so many negative statements from Whitmarsh and Button.

Could be a reality check for Perez to kick out his young ego from both of them, might be the main reason why they are saying all this. Bit like the army, break him mentally to fall in line.

Hmm Perez is older than I am.

    Returning to http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/formula1/20403485

What can they really do without track time to make him that much better? (beyond fitness)

I like this quote "Even if I won all the last races, there will always be question marks," he said in the US.
Actually Perez had you won every race since Monza I don't think there would be any questions.

I hope he does well in Brazil to set him up nicely for winter. That said Sauber aren't afraid of the risky strategies.

"I don't know if he will be up to it straight away."
"I don't think he will be fighting at the front at the start of next season"

That's Button talking about Perez. Wow.

How ironic would it be if it was the other way round and with Hamilton out qualifying both of them...
The expression on Whitless' face would be Priceless!

Taking quotes out of context to make them seem worse and harsher than they were. Poor.

    Full quote was
He is not badmouthing Perez. Its a reasonable expectation that a young driver like Sergio is going to need a period to settle in and mature and to be honest i think these comments coming out of McLaren are mostly wise. They will be telling him that they believe in him, but this sort of takes some of the pressure and expectation off him and gives him more time to grow into his new position. They're not saying he wont compete at the front just that its a lot to expect immediately.

Good to see not everyone is jumping on the McLaren/Whitmarsh/Button Hate-wagon.

It's amazing how different a quote can look when only certain elements are used. :)

Talking of Button... did anybody hear the interview with him after the race on 5 lives f1 podcast? Not sure what's gone on between him and Hamilton but it didn't seem like there was a ton of love lost there.

Doesn't surprise me. It's just another part of McLaren washing their hands of Lewis, which honestly is what it looks like right now.

It's not so much what he says... it's how he says it. You'd have to listen to it. It should still be up on the site. It's somewhere in the middle.

It kinda left me scratching my head a bit.

There was a big Sky love-in with Button after the race and I got the same impression from that. I even posted something to that effect at the time on the race thread, I think...

    And then:

I'll check out the Five Live interview.
