In our redirected mail today, arrived a letter to my wife...saying, if she wants, she can make a payment of 626 quid, just so that her NIC's are up-to-date because she missed 2010-2011.

A few weeks ago also, in my self assessment forms, there was a leaflet saying I could donate my tax refund to charity if I wanted. I'm tempted to offer that any tax I should need to pay could be put to charity....in a nice shiny leaflet.

tell you what HMRC - you can **** right off.

Last year I got one for 690 quid. It made me laugh on the basis that, I would never have even known this if they hadn't been some bloody incompetent. I stopped being self-employed around 2006. for 2006-2007, i done my self-assessment...clearly marked it was the final year for Self Assessment and stated to close the file. Did they ****. Every year they sent me self assessment forms, costing my accountant fees for all these years (which I wrote off against company expenses). Last year...again...called them up saying I was no longer self employed for the last 6 years....can you close the file....which they would finally do after this year. My accountant worked out that that they owed me 690 quid.....which they took forever to pay.

I have a friend that works for HMRC...he said they owe some companies 10s of thousands in tax rebates..and as a result, the companies have folded, waiting for these refunds. They are ****ing evil bastards.

    They are evil.

You would have been in the country when they thought IR35 was a good idea? Let's pick on a limited company for no other reason than they do IT contracts. I know some guys that folded because of that.

Also had a 2 year fight with the ****s because they were saying I'm the only **** in the country that couldn't charge flights and accomodation to business expenses. First they tried bullying by racking up penalties and interest on what they claimed I owed, then they tried to cut a deal saying pay half and we'll let you off with the rest, finally they gave up.

thats outrageous - what argument did they raise that meant flights and accommodation wasn't a legit expense?

The flights and accommodation weren't for him, they were for a hooker from Bratislava, personally, I think HMRC had a point.

You're better bumping them when you can.

Turns out that you can't claim entertainment costs anymore, my works clothes you can't claim for unless they are embroidered!!

    ****s.

In saying that, I bumped them for £400k so I'm well up in that regard.

I was on contract in London and they claimed that the client's office was my place of work and that getting to and from Glasgow every week should be paid out my salary and could not be a business expense.

My accountant told me it was some **** of an inspector trying it on. He pointed out to me that these bastards get paid a commission on what tax they claw back and often bully small businesses and companies in all sorts of ****ty ways.

    They're idiots.

I owed them £400k, they sent me a demand, I told them that the figure that they were claiming was wrong as I was due a Corporation Tax rebate since the company suffered losses in the previous tax year, so they sent me a cheque for £10kish, then sent me another demand instead of just deducting the rebate from the amount due!

I'm due a rebate of all the tax I've paid in this tax year <ok> I was full time up until August 3rd. Even now, I do consultancy work and they still take money as if I was full time.

Reckon I'm due over a grand minimum.
