Free speech advocates have recently been infuriated by Kent coppers who arrested an individual for a Facebook post showing a photo of a burning poppy on Remembrance Sunday. The police have issued a statement saying that an individual from Aylesham had been arrested on suspicion of malicious telecommunications. They confirmed that the man was arrested because of a posting on a social network website of a burning poppy. At the moment, the defendant is in police custody awaiting interview. Apparently, the industry experts are a bit confused, since this is the sort of thing they expected to hear from the US authorities rather than the civilized parts of Kent. Twitter users have even pointed out that thereâs no point of winning either World War if nowadays a person can be arrested for burning a poppy. They also admit that burning a poppy might be obnoxious, but still isnât considered a criminal offence. However, the UK police claimed that the arrest was made under section 127 of the Communications Act, under which an individual can be guilty of an offence in case he or she âsend by means of a public electronic communications network a message or other matter that is grossly offensive or of an indecent, obscene or menacing characterâ. Still, it remains unclear what exactly is âgrossly offensiveâ, rather than just offensive. Apparently, this word is purely subjective. ST will be getting the jail soon for his taste in posting material
I prefer stamping on the little ****ers. I'm going to buy the kids hamsters then stand on them. The guts and blood will be brilliant. I can't wait to see the kid's faces.
I suppose the police have to act on all information/complaints from the public but a bit of common sense wouldn't go amiss. Grossly offended by what a "friend" posted on Facebook? Then do one of the following: Remove them from your "Friends List" Confront them Get a life Policeman in receipt of a complaint about a post on Facebook? Then do one of the following: Check if the poster is a known trouble maker (muslim) and investigate if so Bin it
I myself will sleep easier at night knowing that, despite swinging cuts in police budgets up and down the country, the Kentish constabulary have the time and resources to follow up this kind of bollocks.
They're all running scared since the Savile situation. Useless ****ing ****s. At least we can rest easy knowing that the new Police commisioners, voted in by 10% of the electorate, will sort things out.
My theory its the gov,t doing a Pilate. There has been that much **** surrounding the police the past while (Ian Tomlinson, Hillsborough, people dying in custody) the government dont want accountability for it anymore
I'm going for rank stupidity on the part of this clueless govt. Sorry to disappoint you, but this lot really don't have the brains to conjour up a conspiracy.
The whole thing was an absolute disgrace. At some point we'd need to ask ourselves what constitutes a civilised society? At a bare minimum it should be the freedom to criticise any idea or symbol without a threat of physical violence or imprisonment.
