I think your player was unlucky to be sent off, it was one of those days though when everything went against you. Sunderland took their chances well, Fletcher is a quality player when given support up front. O'Shea spent most of the game either denying he had fouled opponents or swearing at the ref (it was picked up twice on Sky's microphones). Finally, Dimitar Berbetov is an absolute gem of a player. I just love watching his guile and craft.

I agree. And that is disgraceful. This indeed happened to us when we appealed against a sending-off against Michael Turner a few years ago. FWIW I wrote on our board at H-T that by the letter of the law it was a red and you lot wouldn't get it rescinded. But that the FA are ruining games with this approach. It was not a dirty game, and the challenge certainly wasn't malicious. A yellow would have sufficed. Good luck for the rest of the season
Having just watched MOTD2, if it's correct that the refs view of the tackle was blocked how can he give a red card for something he didn't see properly !!!!
My immediate reaction was red. Regardless of the player and whatnot, the sight of him full stretch- clearly two footed- made it look bad. The highlights soften it a bit, as does the knowledge it was Hangelaand, but in the moment it looked bad. The irony was that Cattermole took the hit- he must have committed the most fouls throughout the game- he is such a scumbag! I'm disappointed with the result and injuries, but was fairly resigned by the first Sunderland goal. Berbatov was on another level for the last 25 mins- until Jan it might be worth playing him deeper with Petric up top. If Ruiz isn't jiggered again then he could move left and Duff or Kaca on the right (although Duff had a shocker today). We haven't got an advanced midfielder atm, Karagounis plays very deep and we need to limit Sidwell's involvement once he's won the ball back. Based on today I'd say Berba could dominate the midfield against the weaker clubs lined up for the next run of home games.
You can't go in two footed. It's an unnecessarily harsh rule as relatively tame tackles like Hangeland's get a red when a yellow would suffice but a rule it is. Whether or not he is "that sort of player" isn't relevant and to say Rose's tackle was similar is ridiculous- it was a textbook superb sliding challenge.
The two pundits thought it was 'technically' the correct decision but with no malicious intent. Colin Murray seemed to side with Jol that Hangeland's tackle was on the underside of the ball and (presumably) fair. At the match I thought exactly the same as Jol and having watched the clip, then MOTD2 and now watched the clip again - I believe a red was not the correct decision. They had Reid of WBA and Dion Dublin both thought by the letter of the law it was a red card, but was harsh as he got the ball, the was no malice and his foot was on the ground and never went over the top of ball. But to get the tackle in he did lung of the ground, but it was not a 2 footed tackle and at no time did he lose contact of the ball.
Hangeland made a mistake, but it was not malicious. OK, a Red-card, but if that's the standard, then how come Cattermole was on still the pitch at the end? Irrespective of who slipped who's marker, deflections onto cross-bars, Sunderland had a lucky day (our lucky day this season got us a point vs Everton, not 3). Karagounis was surperb for 30 minutes and there was only going to be one winner. 11 v 11, rather than 9 or 10 would have seen Sunderland walk away with nothing. Let's see what our injury list looks like, but I look forward to getting the rub-of-the-green next time. I was as frustrated as the rest of you, albeit listening on the radio at home rather than at the match. It sounds like it was just one hell of a bad day at the office, with a number of things conspiring against us. It's easy to be despondent about it, but there are actually a lot of positives. As others have said, we played a lot of really good football even with a man (or more) less for most of the match. That, at least, bodes well for the rest of the season and games of 11 vs 11. Yes, the injuries and Hangeland's suspension make the next three games harder, but as discussed on other threads November was always going to be a tough set of matches. We've got points on the board, so even if the next three games go horribly wrong, it shouldn't put us down into the QPR-zone. I'm not saying I don't care about the results of the next three games - of course I do, as we all do - but they aren't anything like as critical as they were at this stage in the previous couple of seasons. We've been saying all season that Hangeland isn't up to his usual form. I don't think Jol was going to drop him, so this at least gives us a chance to see what another centre back pairing looks like. I agree with Bandit that against Stoke we need the extra height of Senderos rather than Baird (if it was Hughes that was missing, I'd be tempted to pair Baird with Brede). If Senderos plays well he deserves to hold his place, if not we can turn to Baird versus Chelsea. Depending on how Burn is doing at Yeovil, there's always the option of recalling him if he might be ready for the first team. I'm not sure that Stoke and Chelsea are the games I would choose for pitching him into the Premier League though. As for Hangeland, maybe an enforced break will do him some good, give him a chance to rethink things a bit and work out why he isn't hitting his usual heights. With any luck, when he comes back against Newcastle (and he surely will come straight back into the side) it will be more like the old him. Petric looked sharp coming on - with all the justified hype about Ruiz and Berbatov, it's good to be reminded that the bench is much deeper than in recent years, certainly when it comes to strikers. One more thought, that's more of a question than specific grounds for hope: When does Karim Frei's loan end? If Kacaniklic's injury is going to be more than a week or so, it could be worth recalling him. Last season he terrorised Chelsea, so maybe Kaca's misfortune has come at just the right time for Karim. Okay, so some of the above is perhaps clutching at straws, but here's my main point: it was a bad day at the office, but not more than a blip. Nothing about yesterday gives any reason to think we're in trouble.
I thought it was a really frustrating game. I thought we controlled the game up to BH getting sent off and even with 10 men looked the more dangerous site. I even put a bet on at half time for us to win the game â what a waste of money that was! Just before Fletcher scored we hit the cross bar then later in the game both Petric and Sidwell miss good chances. Migolet made a great save from Petric. On a different day we could have got a point or even won the game but thatâs the way the game goes some time. I thought Ruiz was excellent again until he came off. He has really stepped up this season and is looking very good. I though Berbatov is showing real leadership qualities too something which I didnât really expect from him. Personally I thought over the 90 minutes we were the better site but Sunderland play a different style of football as has been mentioned above. At the end of the day they took their chances and we didnât. One thing that did make me smile Iâm not sure if you could hear it on the TV was the home fans chanting âWe want Mark Clattenburgâ at the ref. I thought he had a shocker.
Not sure. However, as I understand it we can't recall him within first 28 days and his loan started on 26th October, so that takes us up to this Friday. Realistically then, can't see him featuring even if we recall him until the game after Stoke.
I blame the Fulham chickens - didn't they predict a Sunderland win? Could be time for some chicken tikka massarla down at Motspur Park!
Ruiz and Kaca are both out for 3 weeks according to Jol due to hamstring injury. Senderos and Hughes will be a good pair against Stoke. Both quite strong and relatively good on high balls. Probably Baird and Kara in the midfield. I would see Petric starting up front with Berba in a similar of Ruiz role. If Degajah is available that will be a bonus!
This is where we will see how good we are as a squad...in times of adversity and all that. I still think we have a great opportunity to pick up some points in the next 3 weeks. Berbatov for Captain anyone? he is class isn't he. We need one more like him in CM and I'll be happy for the next 10 years!
Absolutely agree. I’ve been really impressed with Berbatov. He looks dangerous in front of goal and his ball control is exceptional. One thing I have been surprised at is his leadership qualities. We saw it last week at Arsenal when he pulled it back to 2-1 and was rallying the team. Again yesterday when Hangeland was sent off he was shouting at players trying to get everyone to concentrate and rally the team together. When we signed him I knew we had signed a quality striker but wasn’t expecting the leadership qualities he brings to the side too. I think full credit should go to Maartin Jol. We got £4.5 mil for Zamora and got Berbatov for £5 mil. I think that’s great business
I watched the replay ... it was a wreckless challenge to be sure, but marginally a red. Considering Cattermole hopped straight up, and there was minimal contact, I would have expected the ref to give a yellow. I've certainly seen worse tackles given yellow or nothing. Still a disappointing game after a great display last week at Emirates. It's like our form has been yo-yoing since early October. It will be interesting to see if Senderos or Baird partner with Hughes next week. If they're both healthy, I think I'd take Senderos because of his height.
