I genuinely think we will finish 10th this year.

Capable of finishing top six, but my prediction is 10th.

FFS we really don't need this pessimism right now.

It's far too early to know where we'll finish, and I still think we have a good chance of finishing in the top 6/7.

It's still extremely close. Anyone who gets a couple of wins shoots up the table.

12th. The teams who finished below us last season have all improved their squads and are playing well.

Glad to see someone has utmost faith in the team and has pegged us for Relegation. I wonder who that could be <doh>

It's not always pessimism mate, it's a bit of realism IMO. A couple a wins does shoot you up the table, the problem is we don't look like getting a few wins at the moment.

We have plenty of quality but we won't see that until confidence increases. I actually think the midweek game will be a welcome distraction this week and a good opportunity to increase the confidence of the team.

7th for me. I still think once we get everyone fit and the players sort themselves out we'll pick up points. We are fairly fortunate that the league is taking a long time to sort itself out this year. Really tight but there is no getting away from us having dropped some vital points. We need to put Europe to bed now and start getting ourselves sorted out.

Pardew has work to do but more than anything the players have to take responsibility and turn it around. We need a little boost in Jan with a couple of quality signings too. Difficult for a manager when you have so many players out of form and lacking in confidence. Pards needs some consistency in selection. He got us through a tricky early period fairly well but we haven't kicked on.

I still have complete faith in Pardew, the squad and the path we're on long term. The fans have to stick with it too, we're all in this together.

Well said Pouchy. I see the current period we are in as no more than turbulence. We'll strengthen from there and kick on I'm sure.
I heard yesterday that we are 11 points worse off already than at the same stage last season. If we were to take away those 11 from our total last season we would have finished in the 8-10 place bracket.
Add to that the fact that other teams seem to be overachieving this season and 10th is the minimum I'd now expect but not any higher than 8th.

The teams that finished below us but does that mean they'll finish above us? If we continue playing like we are now, then yes we will finish around 12th, but there's still a massive part of the season to go, and we finished where we did last season due to two particular runs. We had our bad points.

It is not realism at all. Realism is looking at the table and seeing that, apart from QPR, no one should be worrying just yet as a couple of good results changes everything.

Pessimism is predicting us finishing below our target position due to an unsatisfactory start when there is still plenty to play for.

It would be more realistic and reasonable to say if we play like we are now all season we'll finish below where we want, but we cannot make a real prediction of our finish right now.

Sorry mate but I disagree. A prediction is made based on past results as they provide the foundation for your forecast. Any prediction that we're likely to finish 6th or above is being based on our players ability on paper and not the field of play. So far the reality is that the points we've accumulated are a fair reflection of our performances, any realistic prediction should be made on said results/performances so far this season.

Does that mean we can't finish 6th or above? Of course not, but the evidence so far this season suggests that the likelihood of that outcome is not very high.

    totally agree.
that is the point of this thread... to suss out people's perception of where we may finish given our current trend.
Please read my post above.. comparing the points tally for a more scientific perspective.
Don't get me wrong, if we finish top 6 then Kleenex will post strong profits once again but I'm also a realist.

Fair enough, but it's just as stupid to say something like based on their performances so far, WBA can finish in the top 4 because they're winning games and have achieved 23 points, but we all know that's not likely to happen.

The same way of thinking can be applied to our side. We haven't played well, but we all know that we can play well, and we're still a side without our best players, so it's not just down to player quality as to why I think we can finish 6th.

Bad luck with injuries has been a big factor also. Colo, Saylor, Simmo, Perch, Raylor, Cabaye, Tiote, Jonas, Krul have all been injured at some point or are currently injured now, and we're only 12 games in.

Correct to a point. But there is no doubt you also have to look at what is on paper. Form is temporary, class is permanent is the phrase I would apply. So while we have underperformed it would be wrong to assume this is our norm now. I believe the real situation lies somewhere inbetween you and Tash's point of view. We have given ourselves a stiffer task by not clicking into gear but we're still a good side. I can see us doing an Everton and finishing around 7th after going better in the 2nd half of the season.

Point well made and in essence I agree <ok>

It's just if someone gave me £100 free bet on where we'd finish I'd place my bet on 8th - 11th rather than 4th - 7th. So many variables in football, we could get no more injuries and suspensions, improving our chances of finishing in the higher bracket. On the other hand Ba, Tiote & Ben Arfa could all get season ending injuries and we'd all need kleenex (to wipe away the tears).

It seems the majority consider 10th... that'll be halfway... which makes us an average PL team...

I seem to recall someone calling me names because I suggested recently that Newcastle United are indeed an average PL team.

    How strange. <cool>

Just put us down relegation, then it won't let me change to mid table. Still should be doing better.

At this point I would be happy with a top 10 finish, a few more bad results against sides we should be beating and the attention will just focus to staying above the mackems
