You united fans get your fair share of abuse for being 'blinkered', but can I please say a big thanks to all those who have been very gracious after the result today, especially on our Matchday thread. Hats off to you all. Good luck for the rest of the season, apart from the obvious
Cheers, Problem is that in order to be blinkered we need to have at least a shred of injustice to work on. You outplayed us across the park. what you say? Good to see you've recovered well from losing Paul Lambert, because you're a good team and i like your manager. As for us well, i think that so many comebacks recently has made us complacant, We lacked purpose all the way through. A performance like this has probably been coming. Hopefully it'll give us a kick in the right direction. Our performance should take away from yours though. Your players wanted it more and it showed.
You shouldn't believe everything people say about us. Some of us are just normal football fans who happen to support a club that has been ridiculously successful in recent years. We lost to a better team on the day, credit where it's due. You have a top manager and some very good players.
I would not go as far as to say 'out-played', certainly matched the Man Utd team. It looks like Chris Hughton has managed to organize a pretty good defensive unit and are capable of hitting on the break. From the first whistle I was, on the whole, impressed with Utd's passing and movement but must admit my relief that clear cut chances for RVP & Hernandez were kept to the bare minimum and those few chances that did come along were dealt with by an excellent John Ruddy. What percentage was us stopping you or you having a bit of an off day I am not sure but I was pretty sure as the 2nd half wore on that it was going to take something just a little bit special to break us down and again thankfully no one was able to produce that moment of magic on the day. Good luck for the rest of the season and see you all for the return game at OT next year
I personally think that game was lost in midfield, Tettey and Johnson stopped Giggs and Carrick doing anything of real note in my opinion. They won most of the 50/50's an picked up stray balls. The ball rarely got to Young and Valencia and when it did, they found it difficult to make anything of it. Certainly didn't create much for Hernandez and RVP. Anyway, good luck for the rest of the season - I believe you have QPR next and we hate them (they no doubt think they'll beat you now just because we did - that was their logic against Arsen-Nil)
Norwich deserved their victory, full stop. I think it would have been a different performance if Rooney had played, as once again his work rate and link-up play were missing.
Midfield and also defence imo. Both sides weren't all that effective in attack, but whereas Norwich dealt well with every chance we created, our defenders weren't as sharp and Smalling lost Pilkington giving him close to a free header. It was a great finish from a difficult angle, and in no way an easy chance, but if Smalling had been really tight there'd have been no chance he'd have gotten it on target. Imo the problems with our defence are still mainly due to the number of injuries we've had - once again we've started the season without anything near to a settled CB pairing. We'll need to get a good pairing going, a la Rio and Evans last year, before we'll be able to stop conceding goals.
I think that's a bit unfair on Smalling. It was a great cross in from Garrido and it's difficult to see what he could have done to prevent Pilkington getting to the ball short of fouling him.
He didn't have to prevent him getting to the ball, he just needed to make it hard for Pilkington. If he'd been close enough to be jumping right next to him, shoulder to shoulder, then that would have been enough to prevent Pilkington getting his header on target. No need to foul him, just pressuring the header would have been enough to stop that being a goal from that distance and angle.
