    <yikes>

    I suppose I'd better clarify..
If JP is not wanted then I don't expect to see the likes of Montrose in the squad. - there - I've stuck my neck out - to be shot down ! - but seriously -
I will accept that there has been some improvement with Montrose ( & people have heard me praise him at the matches ) - and I know that there is a size difference between him & Payne - but the latter gives much more in terms of breaking up the opposition and can actually pass the ball a lot better than Monty - let alone having a better shot on goal than Montrose. JP is more versatile - he can play at fullback ( did so very well a couple of years back ) - and we're not awash with decent fullbacks at the moment.
OK - we do seem to have a healthy number of midfielders, and maybe a move will be in the best interest of Payne - but I hope that he won't go cheaply just because his chances may now be limited before the January transfer window.

We have Davies, Montrose and Frampton who can play there, also Lee if needed. I expect that martin allen wants to sign Vincelot in January as he isnt in Gus Poyet's plans! We can get £400k plus in for Payne and strengthen the squad further!

I am gutted to hear this but no player is bigger than the club, Payne is one of my favourites but we knew he would go eventually sad it is this season but then as long as we buy someone good then we will be ok. I think Payne will be missed and I hope Montrose is not going to replace him as even when he is at his best he is not good enough to replace him, I feel we need to get at least 600k for him because he is a great player and someone like him should never go for less.

It might surprise a few people this and no disrespect to the lad but actually it does not bother me. MA has shown since he has been here, that he brings quality players in for what appears to be next to nothing (Barrett/Nelson) and sells quality players (Gazza) for a tidy sum. Since the season has begun, I wonder how many times I have commented on the lads recent contribution, hardly at all. So maybe the best all round for player and then for the club to take its chosen course.

Free up some cash to either bring Vincelot or Flanagan or both in permenantly come January.

I think there was a deal for him that fell through in the summer anyway due to his personal demands.

I suspect that another club has come sniffing around which has prompted this statement. It is a good move for the club it keeps the fans informed and interests other clubs, in a hope of starting a bidding war!

To be honest Payne has developed as far as he can at the club and needs a new challenge, I think at best Payne has stagnated last season and it could really help his career, look at benefits it did for Crofts. It'll be sad to see him go but I can agree with Allen that it'll be in the best interest of the player and the club

seem to remember martin allen saying that jack payne had a big part to play for us and that he would build up his stacture and have him playing in a more attacking role. seems a very strange one to me, bids will come in for him, certainly does look like any offers out there come january may well be the end of his time with us !

maybe david wright could be coming back after all ?

Sadly, for Payne, he looked a Premiership potential player 3 years ago since when he has not improved one jot. Allen is just reacting in a rational way to the performances he is seeing rather than reputations and it is time to move on and hopefully Payne may prosper in a new environment.
As for Montrose, he looks crude and clumsy in games but he can be wonderfully effective in breaking up the passing game of opposition midfields and he has been the most effective Gills player in a number of recent matches, notably at Wimbledon. Payne may be far more elegant but he does not have the running power or strength of Montrose and often when it is a battle the more strength the better.

Just had a look at the stats, we started Jack Payne in the last eight out of nine games.

If Charlie Allen gets a new deal it'll be because he deserves it.

Wright?? If payne is going we need a decent holding player. Montrose has a worse first touch than denis oli. Id like to see jackman slot back into that position when martin comes back to left back.

    Echo this entirely.

Do you have a problem with it eltorro?
I've seen a few comments making it sound like it will be just cos he's MA's boy.
I reckon he is worth upgrading on performances alone.

As for Jack. There is nothing wrong with him being sold for a decent wad to a higher league club. We all know/knew that would be happening anyway. I'm just a little confused as to why it's been announced. What's wrong with just GFC & the player knowing, and in January he gets sold. Simple.

I like Charlie Allen and think we have missed his energy of late, since he has been out and imo would warrant a new deal on what he has done on the pitch rather than who his dad is

A very strange decision by Mr Allen as Payne is our best holding midfielder in current squad. There is a few reasons for this decision i can see. With the expected transfer fee of hopefully 500k plus add ons, he maybe wants Wright to come back with Vinclot also staying. Another reason could be Payne is a little bit injury prone. Has Payne played his last game as now they won t want him getting a long term injury.

Im a big fan of both Martin Allen and Jack Payne so its a hard one for me but for once I think Mad Dog has made the wrong decision here. Ok people like Montrose have improved and Vincelot has been playing but I'd much rather JP over them two. His ability to spot a pass is much worthy of a higher league standard and I feel we may miss out if we let him go in Jan. Sure we might get some decent funds for him but we've actually had the luxury of having funds this season so I would much prefer to keep him than get the money.
