I think Changes did move to the market for a while, then John moved to Leeds and opened a much bigger store in partnership with someone else on Call Lane. I went to see Herbie Rides Again when they had the full size beetle on the canopy outside the Dorchester, I must have been ten and I remember being most impressed at the time.
Unbelievable at times aren't they? I recently bought a second hand Army cold weather quilted sleeveless jacket from what I can only describe as a jumble sale. This was in Aberfeldy in Scotland and it cost me three quid. The fuhrer refuses to be seen with me when I wear it, she reckons I look like a bin man. When I informed her that bin men have to wear high visibility tabards these days the clever mare just said , " Alright then you look like a 1970's bin man". Healthy and safety not being as prevalent in those days, quite clever of her really. Did Stan Ogden own such an item I wonder? I suppose it might help if I wore something under it.
Do you have any recollection of a Sportswear stall in Kings Market ? I bought a pair of Trimm Trabb from there, it also stocked a small selection of Munsingwear lambswool jumpers.(quite popular now it seems) They didn't have much stock, but what they did have ,was pretty cool for what was available locally. ( i.e Jim Bell in Bev, for Lyle & Scott (before he opened a store in Hull), Runnercare for two toned Adidas Gagoules, and that outdoor clothing shop on Chants Ave for the famous "Blizzard Parka"). All essential school uniform !!
I have a vague recollection of the sportswear shop in Kings Market, but being a punk I did most of my shopping at Transvaal on Spring Bank, with footwear from Furmans on Saville Street. Before that, all my clothes came from Royce Menswear, as my dad was one of the owners.
I'll tell you how sad I am, the first thing I thought when I looked at that photo was, they've moved the dart board in the Rovers.
And I'll tell you how sad I am. I was genuinely upset when I saw that the Rovers didn't have carpet. Gutted for about a week I was. I always thought it had carpet, it should have carpet. What hasn't it got carpet???
When i changed my fashion of choice, i also bought my footwear from Furmans (Buckled/laced Airwair with a narrowed toe), old 501's, and 50's bowling shirts from another stall in Kings indoor Market, that sold vintage American clothing. Finished off with a Flat Top crewcut, courtesy of Steve Rowe (I swear the man hated cutting hair) at Classic, underneath Yankee Burger.
Was it dad and lad? Think it was. They certainly had the right idea though. They had some cracking fit birds working there. Dont think it was under Yankeeburger either mate. Got my ear pierced there and did one of the hairdressers, not at the same time though.
Also the grand Georgian houses that used to be next to whats now Pozition were scandalously destroyed to make way for some freakish college building . I think there was only 1 damaged building in that row which ironically is still standing . Not wanting to take anything away from those that suffered through the Hull blitz , but it seems the real blitz on the citys buildings happened 20 odd years later
Steve Rowe's still going, he's got that Classics barber/piercing/tattoo shop at the end of Saville Street(next to where Dapper was). I don't know where he was before, but there was nothing underneath Yankeeburger(my gran worked there when it The Pioneer)... please log in to view this image
It was somewhere near your dad's shop, same side as the old Mail building. you did go down some stairs to it.
Are you sure it wasn't actually in the Mail Buildings? I'm pretty sure there were steps that went down to big basements in there and steps that went up to the doors for the Mail. Next door to the old mans place maybe? http://www.flickr.com/photos/coversetc/5097144448/lightbox/
Don't remember a son cutting hair, but do remember all the young women (the girl to the right of his chair was his wife (Not first one ), who was lovely). I do remember walking down the stairs to the Till point/reception and all the hairdressers around the corner. He used to fit wigs in the back room as well. I was sure the door was next to , or at least , near Yankee Burger. Before they moved to there current position, they relocated to another basement across from its original position. I used to think i had a good memory, obviously not. I'll ask ourkid , he still lives in Hull.
