Started a similar thread on our board chaps and seemed to spark some good memories. what's your best moment as a fan of SAFC?
Despite us being rather 'average' for the majority of my 32 years there have been many, so many. I do have a clear winner though, and that is Carlos Edwards screamer vs Burnley. We went into the game expecting to win, the atmosphere was fantastic, Burnley hadn't read the script, and they were superb that night. We played well, but they were stubborn, picked us off on the break, we went 1 up, missed a pen, then Andy Gray who had been woeful for us scored twice for Burnley. 2-1 down, we got another pen (Connolly scored, Burnley also scored a pen, wild game...). Then it happened.... Carlos was known for some screamers, but this was the ultimate. Quick break, 3 passes back to front, cutting across ball, absolute raker, 3-2, we're going up. I have never celebrated a goal like it before or since.
1] 1973 FA Cup Final 2] Sunderland 4-0 Chelsea (at half time!) 3] Play-off semi final at SJP 4] Winning 2-1 at SJP after Gullitt dropped Shearer (dropped Shearer FFS!?) 5] Beating Ipsich 4-0 at Roker after going to my cousin's wedding. Marco hat-trick before he was sent off.
Funny how this thread is directly above one called 'the abstract concept' (or something). Although saying this will move it.
For pure nervous excitement it has to be the Play off at St James. We were at the front 16 years old and admit to a few nervy jumps when the gimps ran onto the pitch albeit only trying to get the game abandoned.
Listen to saints beat united 3 - 1 on the radio with my dad. Carling Black Label, brewed for a fuller football flavour! We were 3 nil up at half time and they came out after changing from grey to blue. I still rwmeber that day even though I was only about 11 Edit; just realised this isn't the Southampton forum. Sorry
!973 goes without saying. Agree with MM on the Carlos Edwards goal. Was in my usual seat in the North stand and you knew as soon as it left his foot it was a goal. Keiran for THAT free kick Ji against city Shearer getting Newcastle relegated. The noise when the news came thru was unbelievable. oh such joy. We haven't had much to cheer so when its good we savour them moments with glee.
Being a Sunderland fan isn’t about best moments, single games or goals. It’s not about past players or managers and its not where we play either. It’s far more intrinsic than that. It’s a deep-seated fundamental generic DNA that makes us who we are. What’s best about being a Sunderland fan goes right to the very soul of man kind itself and the ultimate question of the origins of man? Why are we here at all? Being a Sunderland fan is a blessing; a gift from God. Something to be treasured and nurtured; loved and caressed for all its glory and passion. Being a Sunderland fan is what you are and above all, its stops the devils curse from infecting your gene pool and being a mag.
This. I had a house full of the wife's family, none of whom are Sunderland fans or football fans even, when they heard me shouting and screaming when Ji scored, they thought I was having a fit.
Some great ones there marra which I most certainly agree with. However, I would have to put the 2-0 away win against the Skunks in the play-off semi final in my list, which was made better by the pitch invasion from our fiends up the road who consequently bumped into the invisible force field which somehow appeared on the pitch when they realised there was no one to stop them reaching the Sunderland end.. The Wembley play off final against Charlton would probably make both my best and worst moments because of the sheer bloody edge of the seat drama. PS..I have just noticed that you too had the mag play off on your list..
Sunderland's promotion 95/96 season. Was at uni I'm Preston and they got promoted as well so atmosphere was cracking. They even adopted and changed the cheer up Peter Reid song for their own. Second best, SKP's winner at St james' lol! ****ing brilliant
