Remote controlled aircraft that are extremely fast. It's the speed at which it moves that is really puzzling.

Technically, until the revolution they were all British hence why they were considered rebels. We think of ot simply as Americans rising against the british...it won't have felt as simple as that at the time. Many British-Americans were killed as they fled for the Canadian border. A lot of the revolutionaries didn't want to go for full independence, but the British government/Crown handled it badly. Handled better with compromises and they would have got independence much later...the same as Australia etc.

Have England got any chance of winning the test series in India?....they are already behind the 8 ball after day one of the first test and look to have made a huge mistake by not including Panasar in the team...I can see England really struggling to save the game against India's spinners in the 4th innings.

Wow wow wow wow....there's a 4th innings now? And they say that test cricket drags on long enough with just the two innings.

From what I've read, I don't think people born in the colonies were considered British.... Weren't they refereed to as Yankees by both the British and native American population?

The fact that not all American-born people supported devolution suggests that there was at least ambivalence. And a large group of nonsupporters tried to escape to Canada shows they considered they had more links with the British in Canada than with the 'rebels' in America. In fact, their first declaration was that taxation without representation in the British Parliament alienated their rights as Englishmen. Benjamin Franklin (incidently a really great and interesting man) tried to broker peace and wanted to remain with Britain but was treated badly when he came to England. A little more respect to the American colonies and some leeway on taxation may have prevented the rift, though they would have got independence since then, so it's just a moot point.

You have your emphasis wrong. It should be Was born February 22, 1732 Westmoreland, Virginia, British America

Yes, I realize that on some minor technical level Washington could be considered English only due to the fact that there was no country of America when he was born.

But he was born in Virginia, and both his parents were born in Virginia as was his grandfather. So he was a third generation American who could trace his roots in America back 100 years to 1656, which is about as far as it was possible to go unless you were a real Native American. And unlike some of his peers, he was educated in America. He lived his entire life without ever setting foot in England.

It's true that not all the colonists supported independence but surely Washington cannot be counted as one of them. He was present at the first Continental Congress. He was also present at the Second Continental Congress where the Declaration of Independence was signed. He did not sign the Declaration of Independence only because he was putting his money where his mouth was by serving as Commander in Chief of the US forces in the Revolutionary War. In fact it is said he showed up at the Second Continental Congress in uniform to indicate his readiness to declare war on England.

Then of course, he presided over the Constitutional Convention and was the first to sign the document, and from there he became the first President. "First in war, first in peace, first in the hearts of his countrymen." Kind of hard to imagine how Washington could have been any more American or less English. It is only natural that we view him as American, and I'm quite sure he would have viewed himself the same way.

Basically, Washington was as English as Mahatma Gandhi.

True, and I have absolutely no idea how they do that. I think that's the stumbling block and the one that actually confounded the expert.

Just think, for 20 or so MPs, all that bloodshed could have been avoided.

Indeed, but the British government were very unreasonable which you wouldn't need hindsight to have seen. No taxation without representation is hardly an outrageous demand.
