On the weekend of December 1st.

It potentially has a capacity of 32,000, but so far they've only been using the lower tier which seats 22,000. They plan to install 10,000 seats in the upper tier sometime soon I think.

Never even heard of it to be honest. Then again, no one has ever heard of Ballymena either.

I have! But I have no idea what it's like.

Harpenden is a town of 30,000 based in Hertfordshire, just north of London, and is a 30 minute train journey from King's Cross St Pancras. It is situated directly between Luton and St Albans, and is only a 10 minute drive to either. Stanley Kubrick lived and died here. Now you've learnt something today.

That was very proud moment for us. It was also briefly mentioned in a Monty Python sketch where an airplane hijacking goes wrong.

Huh, sounds like Ballymena. 30 minutes north-west of Belfast, about halfway between there and the North Coast. About 10 minutes away from Slemish, where Saint Patrick worked as a shepherd after he was enslaved. It's also known as the drugs capital of Ireland. Bit of a ****hole really.

Famous sons include our own Steven Davis, Ian Paisley, Nigel Worthington and Liam Neeson.

    Ho ho - that'll be right !

    And its aeroplane not airplane.

Cant believe that Harpenden has no foreigners given that it is just outside Luton - large immigrant population in that area, where a few terrorists have been found previously if i am not mistaken.

Yeah I'm gonna go with airplane. And it's "can't" not "cant". A "cant" is an inclination or a slope.

Yes, the 7/7 guys met up in Luton (didn't come from there though) and the famous CCTV video that captured them boarding a train was at Luton station. There's a large population of Pakistanis in the town, but they don't seem to cross the border into Hertfordshire very often, though there was one who came to school over here and was a good friend of mine.

In what is an amazing coincidence, I just went onto Reddit to discover that Stanley Kubrick's daughter and grandson are doing an AMA (ask me anything). I asked them if they still live in Harpenden and they replied "close by".

Sorry about the forgotten apostrophe old chap !
Thanks for the run-down on Luton's connection to the 7th July attack - thought that there was some connection. I also know a decent Pakistani family here in Southampton + loved Afridi when he was playing in Hampshire's T20 side.

I wish that i could persuade you to use aeroplane instead of that airplane word though - still can't win em all.

Actually I've decided that I prefer most "Americanisms" and as a stand for common sense and against silly patriotism, I'm going to do my part to introduce them into the UK English vocabulary. I promise not to say "aluminum" or "sidewalk" though.

If you're interested three of the bombers came from Leeds, and the other from Aylesbury. They decided (quite rightly) that Luton would be a safe place for them to convene. It is a proper ****hole, and is only useful for the airport, which is handy for getting you the **** out of there as quickly as possible.

Common sense is something which is in short supply these days and i am all for it being applied far more often.
Not sure what you mean by silly patriotism but i suppose that you do - i am patriotic but i wouldnt call it silly in any shape or form. I dont like the English language being littered with Americanism's but i also know that we cannot stem the flow of it given the amount on tv, internet, etc, etc.

I went to Luton a couple of years ago to a funeral and collected an Irish colleague from Luton Airport en route and i agree with you, not my idea of a nice town, although the crematorium was, well a crematorium, but it was pleasant. Do Luton Town still play at Kenilworth Road - went there once years ago ?

Yep, I've been there once as well to see them play Wrexham. I know people who go all the time, and I can't understand why.

If they are Luton Town supporters then i can understand why they go there ! Other supporters used to laugh at our old ground but i loved the Dell.
Game i went to there was a cracker - in the early 80's when we had our best ever one-touch pass attacking team, think the score was 3-3 if i remember correctly. Luton have given Saints a few thrashings over the years there though, 7-0 and 6-1 spring to mind unfortunately.
