Mark Clattenburg: Police drop investigation into referee
    13 November 12 18:59

The Metropolitan Police has dropped an investigation into alleged comments by referee Mark Clattenburg towards Chelsea's John Obi Mikel.
Police said there was no evidence an offence was committed during Manchester United's 3-2 win over Chelsea.
The Football Association investigation, launched after a complaint by Chelsea, will continue.
Chelsea accused Clattenburg of using "inappropriate language", including racial words, towards Mikel.

I think that F.A. charges should be brought against Chelsea due to their wrongfull allegations

afterall Clattenburg has not been allowed to ply his trade due to the allegation
his reputation has been questioned by a football club in public and by doing so are trying to pick their own ref's

Can you see the FA/Premier league giving him another Chelsea game ??

a fine would be of little deterrent to a club like Chelsea
they will be thinking it was worth it

what now and who next you might say

I don't personally want to see the competition devalued because of a points deduction, but I don't see how Chelsea can escape serious sanctions for crying wolf in this instance. I would prefer that Chelsea issue a longwinded and public apology to Clattenburg, and pay compensation wages for loss of earning and a fine for defamation straight into his bank account, to be honest. I see that as the common sense approach... But there isn't much of that in football at present...

Glad thats over. Don't know how the authorities allowed it to get this far, after all Mikel was stood next to Clattenburg and admitted not hearing anything. It was another ( non English speaking player ) who supposedly heard the comments. Chelsea really do need the harshest treatment against them.

Ban them from Europe next season. Or Transfer ban? Surely this would be the only thing to deter other clubs from this sick kind of witch hunt.

Any team playing against them automatically gets a free penalty before kick off for the remainder of the season starting at game 20.

Unbelieveable that they even tried to divert the racism issue surrounding the club on to a referee.
Agree that a points deduction or a transfer embargo (min 4 windows) but also think they should have to pay compensation to Clatternberg for dragging his name through the mud.

Chelsea should be docked points, everyone could see what they were doing, it was just purely being sore losers.

Chelsea should certainly not be docked points or be punished in any way for me. You have to put yourself in their shoes as an employer before you cane them. They have a set of misguided employees asking them to take formal action on their behalf. You can't just refuse. Supposedly they tried to get the players to think about what they thought they heard and asked them to be sure it has not been misheard. The three players in question remained adamant it took place (two saying they heard it and one wanting to take it forward). You can't just dismiss that regardless if you believe they are wrong. It is quite clear to me this is a simple case of non speaking English players misinterpreting, Clattenburg is never going to have used such an inflammatory phrase for such a benign situation. There is no information available to my knowledge that he would use these type of comments at all or has ever been guilty of the use of racist language. We all know this, Chelsea know this.

The FA has a chance to make a standpoint here. They can reach the right decision and then comment that the players need to undergo further English lessons to help avoid misunderstandings in the future. The players should accept the FA's decision and formally apologise to him. Thy should all also have to make a contribution to the Kick it Out campaign to help further their work in the fight against genuine racism.

We need a common sense approach to avoid the situation spiraling and decisions being taken with emotion.

Problem is WP, they've put a mark (no pun intended) against Clattenburg. Defamation is a more than viable lawsuit in this instance, so Chelsea, or the players involved, should be paying Mr C a substantial amount as well as making the public apology <ok>

The thing is, i don't think the FA will come out and say there was definitely NO racism, they will probably just say there findings were inconclusive... thus leaving this 'mark' there on his record for ever

I can't see how they can do that with a ref that they employ, it could damage their image. Even if they go on the "balance of probabilities" again, I reckon they'll state their verdict as fact.

I Know what you mean, but the FA would have to come down seriously hard on Chelsea is they do... for them i'd say the easy option is sitting on the fence.

I hope it doesn't go legal to be honest. That is the problem with football at the moment, its problems are no longer self contained. It just ends up that football is the last thing being discussed for weeks on end. I feel for Clattenburg, he should never have been accused. I just think this needs nipped and put to bed. They've made a serious error of judgement and clearly they have to face some action. But it is an error of judgement/misunderstanding of language. We have a habit in football at present of blowing things out of proportion.

Chelsea, I'm just not sure what people expect? I do know that to a man/woman you'd all be disappointed and feel wronged if you raised what you thought was a genuine case of misconduct and your employer told you to do one! I know Chelsea are an easy club to dislike but it would be absolutely wrong to claim they've done wrong here. They haven't.

Howey - They did lodge the complaint quickly because they could not get the players to back down or wait. Ray Wilkins confirmed it. You can't force them to see common sense unfortunately. Chelsea are blameless but the media have once again played their part in influencing their part in it. Logic and being a responsible employer dictates they simply had to act.

Actually in this circumstance Mr Clattenburg's reputation has not suffered one bit. Regardless that there is yet to be verdict, nobody except the 3 said players and the association of black lawyers actually feel the claims have any credibility!!

My main fear is our weak FA coming out saying the evidence is inconclusive. I don't think any doubt will remain unless you are an imbecile. However they have to make a stand so that players across the leagues understand this is not acceptable, and is indeed detrimental to the fight against racism.

Clattenburg should be allowed to ceremoniously kick Mikel in the bollocks at Chelsea's next home and let that be an end to it.
