How do you get milk smells out of car interiors?

Last week when I was coming home from Tesco, the milk decided to leak. It spilt onto the boot floor and into the bit where the rear seats sit. Got a guy currently having a bash at it at the moment but none of people I contacted would say whether or not they would get rid of the smell. I had to take out the larger rear seat because it took the brunt of the spillage. It's now got mould in the foam so I'm thinking I may need to pay for a new one. Anyone got any recommendations as to how to get the stink out of the upholstery? I suppose I could set the car on fire but that seems a little over the top....

 

Just replace the carpet and seat. Best option.

2 bottles of febreeze is the alternative. Got baby sick stink out of our seat upholstery so a bit of mouldy milk will be childsplay to it!

 

Exactly. I've emptied one bottle of it already to no avail. I think the reason it's persisting is due to the bacteria in the milk. Or something. I heard someone say that so I'm assuming that they must be a knower of such things.

 

Either Sprinkle baking soda over the area and let it sit for a day then vacuum it up or use pet odour remover as thats designed to deal with organic problems

 

Isn't baking soda used in cakes and whatnot? I'll still try it if this guy hasn't solved it, but I'm still curious why cake ingredients help...

Can't really help, possibly Dettol/fungicide if the problem spreads massively...

 

petrol and a match will get rid of the smell, the seat and the car, claim on the insurance, problem solved.

Thanks for the suggestions chaps. The guy has finished with my car and it smells much more like pine fresh than sour milk so that's good. I'll have to see what happens from here onwards and then I'll evaluate whether I need the baking soda...or indeed the matches.

 

Dammit BLS, beat me to it. I can't think of any other chemicals (available at home) apart from the obvious cleaning products.

 

Vinegar? Although in a car thats not really that practical :s

 

I've found mixing baking powder and bleach makes a pretty effective cleaning agent, but it's hardly something you can use in the car. The fumes are horrendous.

I saw the thread title and thought this was an actual joke. I assumed there'd be some kind of punchline involved. But no it's all serious here. Disappointment of the year

 

So are the fumes from babysick and gone off milk! How much worse could it get?

 

The first time I did it, I overdid the quantities slightly, and forgot about the gas. My lungs hurt for the rest of the day, and I was coughing like I had TB for an hour or so. Cleaned the shower up nice though.

 

What was the end result, Im on tenterhooks!

 

Aside from getting a new car, nothing gets rid of babysick or mouldy milk fumes!
