Not really. I can't think of many clubs, Utd, Spurs and Newcastle aside for obvious reasons, who would say finishing one place higher than last season would be "fantastic". It would have been perfectly realistic to say that anything worse than last season would be unacceptable, and finishing seventh is the minimum expectation.

A fantastic season would be winning something or coming close to the CL places, which if we're entirely honest is a possibility given how open the race for 4th looks and the fact you've had a difficult start to the season. It would be ambitious, given your limited squad, but possible - just look at what Everton achieved in 04/05.

As it stands, he sounds like he's given up on achieving anything for at least the next couple of years, and will accept relative mediocrity, which is hardly likely to drive his players on, or attract good quality new players to the club.

I don't know where you are getting the £11 million from, it was £8.9 million. You shouldn't believe everything you read in the newspapers. The newspapers said Liverpool paid £20 million for Jordan Henderson, that was as inaccurate as an Alex Ferguson post match interview after a defeat. Damien Comolli said at the time, ''the figures being bandied about on how much we paid for Jordan Henderson are way off the mark''. £16 million is according to Damien Comolli is closer to the mark.

What, including the red shiite Echo?

    http://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/live...e-with-roma-for-fabio-borini-100252-31385026/

Only £16M up front for Henderson eh, that changes everything lad, he's proper value at that isn't he?

Anyway, do you accept that the comments from Rodgers are FACT now, & not something that; "Only a complete imbecile or a Manchester United fan with an axe to grind would believe that Brendan Rodgers made such a statement" hahaha. Boooom Headshot.

    No I don't believe it.
I believe the other comment, due to the fact that it's more realistic and more accurate. The previous comment was as stupid as Gollums ''We are the peoples club'' comment. ''Village peoples club'' maybe, after wearing that horrendous pink kit.

Better get on to the BBC & ask them to remove this awful lie then...

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/20292420

"The reality is we're a long way off in the league," said Rodgers. "We finished eighth last year. If we can improve on that, it'll be fantastic for us"

"That's the reality of where Liverpool are I'm afraid. But our young players will get better and better."

Rodgers knows that with funds limited at the club it will take time to try to improve the Merseysider's fortunes, although he has urged his rebuilding process is not hindered by harking back to the club's illustrious past.

"They're very educated, Liverpool supporters. It can't be easy for them," said Rodgers. (he's obviously not come across you yet btw)

"Most of us in this room know Liverpool and its great history, but we can't keep looking in the rear view mirror and looking back"

"If you're not going to have a massive investment to make it happen quickly, you have to develop it. That's where we're at.

Again, take his use or overuse of language into the context of how he always bloody speaks. He always lays it on thick. I think there's very little difference between his & your sentences other than semantics. You're reading between lines when there is nothing there.

If circumstances are right (others under performing, luck with injuries & decisions etc) can we overachieve? Yes; as you say anyone can but that doesn't accurately portray where you actually are. Our league position does. Because I'm actually listening to everything he says (not just this time) rather than looking for sentences to twist into soundbites I think he's being balanced and not remotely "giving up" or "accepting mediocrity". He has said he would like to see an improvement in league position from last year. He has said it would take a couple of league windows to get the squad he wants. Since he is at LFC & as you say we demand league competitiveness would it be, safe to assume he & his bosses would expect considerable improvement after each window & that if he's talking about being right up in the mix in just a couple of seasons he's actually being very optimistic! Nowhere does it suggest that 5-6th will be acceptable in two years.

Saying you don't have the team to win the league & won't have the funds necessary to do so immediately is hardly accepting mediocrity. And it makes no inference on what way you expect the players you have now to perform . I'm going on the idea that BR like most professional coaches, doesn't wait for the "player ratings" in the papers to inform him who is performing and who isn't; who has potential, who should be dropped or sold. Who's a lazy Git. I think despite the occasional bollox he gives the press the players are very clear on what he expects each match never mind each season. Taking the pressure off publicly & putting it On privately is as old as the hills.

If any professional player believes they can give 50% due to a media statement like that, they'll not be a player for long.

And nowhere do his comments negate the idea of winning something other than the league. We are out of one comp but I believe still in two more?

But that would just be thinking logically & sensible rather than talking ****e for the sake of getting a response eh?

    You're correct in your analysis.
Firstly Brendan is not being defeatist, he's being realistic. Everyman and his dog knows Liverpools squad is a minimum 6 players light. Do I feel with proper invesntment that Brendan can do better in the transfer market than Kenny did? Yes I do. Out of Kenny's signings, Kenny had a decent success rate, Enrique is a good player, but his form has dipped, but form is temporary. It happens to many players. Coates is a fabulous centre-back that has the potential to be a massive player for us with experience. Bellamy came in and did a job and there is of course Luis Suarez. Henderson is neither a success or a flop, so I will reserve judgement. So in a nutshell, Kenny has had 4 successes, 4 flops and 1 maybe.

Can Brendan do better? I'm sure he can. I just feel that it may take a sizeable investment to take the squad to the next level as its pretty weak.

That was my point - he usually lays it on thick in terms of bigging Liverpool up and claiming how great they are. This is one of the first times I've seen him speak like that in a way that does Liverpool down. Maybe I'm reading too much into it, but it seems like a big sea change from a man who was talking about challenging for the top four a month ago, and that was after you'd only just hauled yourself out of the relegation zone.

And if I'm honest I thought I could get a bit of a rise out of certain unnamed posters... ;)

Nah, he doesn't start nearly enough threads to compare to Christian. There's only one poster I can think of right now who starts loads of pointless Utd related threads on the Liverpool board, has them closed by his own mods, and whose fellow supporters admit not reading his threads cos they assume they must contain some Utd related BS.

Can't think who that poster's name is tho'....

You were adamant that he hadn't made the comment 2 posts back, now he's just being a realist? make your mind up.

Kenny had a decent success rate with his signings? haha, tell me another. No mention of Carroll, Adam & Downing then, btw Henderson is confirmed as being jarg <ok>
