Because Villas-Boas felt that it would leave us too open, which we were anyway.

Any team is going to get exposed at City. Surely Defoe would have been able to exploit the gaps earlier ?

we might as well play with 10 men. Dempsey has offered us nothing all season. Despite adebayor looking like he might have got sent off, he'd have been better playing in Dempsey's position with defoe just in front.

Daws for Walker was a very sensible substitution!

I'm not annoyed at losing away to City, as most teams will, but I'm pissed off with seeing the same stupid, negative subs every game.
When Walker came off, why not bring on Naughton? When Defoe came on, Dempsey should've gone off. We were getting hit down the left, so why bring on a right-back?
None of it made any sense and we threw the points away.

Very very poor in my opinion.

It was so predictable that we'd concede late on again so the subs and tactics need to address this. If I can see it coming AVB should too.

I'd encourage everyone to WUM the **** out of the match threads on the Arsenal board, by the way.
As Piskie indulges in such behaviour, he clearly can't complain about it. <ok>

thuds laziness cost us the first goal.

    Brads poor reflexes the second.

they will still play next week though.

AVB must have problems with his eye sight. Anyone could see Jan's legs had gone and Dempsey was completely hopeless. Instead he subs Walker and Ade. What is he thinking? I'm starting to worry about this guy in charge now... two defeats on the bounce and in both games, goes for negative substitutions which result in nothing.

Should have started with Defoe and Adebayor..Dempsey is just not making an impression. Also until we have Kaboul and Vertonghen back in the middle keeping that high line is suicide against better teams.

Could have won todaythough. They were rattled; If we had concentrated on getting Bale up against Zabaleta. No way would he have stayed on the pitch.

First half was good but, as so often seems to be the case this season we were far too negative in the second half. Dempsey was poor to say the least, Adebayor in his position has been suggested on here and I think that would be viable as often Dempsey was the furthest man up the pitch. Verts was getting found out a bit at LB as well, he's been excellent so far but didn't play his best game today.

I seem to be saying it every week but once again there are positive signs but we are just too negative in the second half. If we could play 2 first halves we would be doing much better in the league!

as must as I want to see us using our future goalkeeper, i thought Friedal had a good game today.

there was just no link up play between the midfield and attack... again. Dempsey is just a waste of a position. sorry to keep banging on about it, but it's getting ridiculous now. he looks completely lost. AVB has got to try someone different there.

    Negative, Negative, Negative.
Our whole game based on set plays ( like watching Stoke)
A whole season of AVB ugly football is like a slow painful death.

What comment did you feel was wumming ?

I thought it was a good game. I thought Adebayor dived to get zabaleta booked, but other than that, i'm not too sure what you're upset about.

  15. Huddlestone (other than one freekick) and Dempsey were simply not good enough.
Bale needs to have a serious look at himself after that performance. He left Verts horribly exposed especially when Maicon came on, yet added little outlet going foward.
The passing generally was poor and apart from Sandro there were no standout performances. Losing at Citeh is not the disappointment, losing in that manner is.
Ade did well throughout and I can only guess that AVB was concerned he would get sent off. Otherwise why would leave Dempsey on!!
Not a good day - and just wish I hadn't got the score prediction right!!

as someone else rightly pointed out a couple of weeks ago - we stopped conceding late goals a couple of years ago now. at the moment, we seem to be encouraging it. these negative substutions are the reason for that as we just invite more and more pressure and have nothing to counteract that going forwards.

he did it against norwich as well. costing us the game.

he needs to grow some ****ing balls (and replace some players) and actualy go for the win. Everyone knew JD was going to contribute nothing. esp when we were clearing it.
Naughton was a waste of time sub (and played on dzeko)

for me we need to buy or replace:

JD - Not consistant enough - fine for cups but not in the league Ade an another should be ahead
a new winger - we have no other options once lennon or Bale get tired
Gallas - why is he in the team?
LB - so we can play verts + Caulker
Thud - too slow to get around the pitch.
Friedel - why is he still playing? have we gone back to the Commoli days where we need a winger so he buys Jol a new CM or defender? if we didnt need lloris, why buy him?
Sessengon - or someone similar for when dembele is not playing or to play behind ade. We need that movement through the middle and the ability to do something different. Thud, dempsey and Siggy are not able to provide this.

Don't agree that the subs were silly. Walker was clearly limping and City had just brought on Radio and I thought Dawson's ability in the air would come in handy. Also reasonable to put Defoe in Adebayor's position to see what happened. Sig instead of Dempsey might have been tried too.

I thought we put up a reasonable show with four important players missing

  19. How the hell was Brad responsible for the 2nd???? arguably his positioning was at fault for the 1st - too far to the left - but there isn't a keeper in the world who would have done better with the 2nd.
He had a decent game considering

I don't think AVB helped with the substitutions, but I can see what he was trying to do. Problem is that Spurs are conceding late goals, so his decisions are going to come under scrutiny.

I think the biggest mistake he made was not playing Defoe from the start
