He's gone there until the 4th December... I'm surprised we couldn't find a League club to take him. However, a bit of first team football ought to do him good.

Seems to be a problem we've had for years, not being able to send our youngsters out to League teams. Was very suprised to see Mambo join the Dons this season, after representing about 10 non-league sides. Same thing happened with Carl Jenkinson - loaned out to Welling, then Eastbourne, 6 months later he's playing for Arsenal.

Do our club just not rate these players very highly? Or are we just shocking at convincing League One/Two teams that are youngsters are any good?

Surely we could just tell them "he's the next Jonjo Shelvey/Carl Jenkinson...Scott Parker/Jermaine Defoe" etc.

Strange to think that West Ham can parade around the likes of Frank Nouble, who would look like the weak-link in a Sunday pub-team, to Championship sides, yet we can't convince small local(ish) sides like Barnet, Wimbledon or Dagenham to try out our hottest prospects.

Thoroughly depressing news, especially after his pre-season showings against Welling and Sporting.

And with the greatest respect to Newport County and it's fans, how is this going to boost his claim for a place in a Championship side?

3 goals from 6 games at Accrington Stanley last season. Newport County this.

I don't know who the first club are, but it feels like a step down. On the plus side, Newport are top of the BSP so it may suit a loan policy (sending players to different types of club to develop character) and may boost confidence

He looked good at Barnet during pre-season, but was awful against Orient in the Rumbelows Cup.

If he bangs them in for Newport, he may get a better loan deal later in the season. But, at the moment, he is simply not good enough for the Championship.

From what I've seen, he seems to suffer a bit because of his height. Despite being 6 foot 4 or whatever, he's no good in the air, but still a pretty good target-man when it comes to holding the ball up.

I just hope (if he gets games at Newport) they don't just hoof the ball to his head in the hope he'll be able to flick it on...then label him as being crap if he doesn't.

I don't have a problem personally. He is going to hopefully get games in a winning team, which will give him the chances to score goals & build confidence. Going to a struggling League 2 club can mean one chance a game and consistent battering a, chasing lost balls. Not much good to development

And also, I find, depressingly predictable. :emoticon-0101-sadsm

Am I alone in this view?

You obviously missed the touch of irony in the first post. However i stand by the comment. Hulse was better against Cardiff but on the evidence of the two games against Wolves and Boro (when my original post was written) I saw absolutely nothing to suggest that he is a guy who is apparently capable of playing in the prem. He would certainly be nowhere near our team when fuller and Kermorgant are fit. Lets hope the Cardiff performance is nearer the norm than his first two.

Have to agree with jimbob. Hulse was shocking against Wolves and Boro. Hit the post when 30cm's from the goal, then put the simplest header wide against Wolves, never won a single header against Boro and constantly lost possession/didn't chase defenders/the goalkeeper down.

Decent performance against Cardiff, so I too am hoping that that game was closer to his usual self.

I would hope so. Our player scores two in two games, What is depressing about that?

But predictable, yes, He is playing for a team top of their league three tiers down. If he doesn't score (say) 8 in 12 games it would suggest he is a mile off Championship standard. Clarke's 8 in 11 for a struggling team two tiers higher is a much more impressive statistic but would any of us want to see him in our first team?

I think Smith is in the right place to, as Ben posted, build up his confidence. But having done that, he then has to do it all over again at a higher level. After his performance against Sporting we may be disappointed he hasn't developed faster, but that may be down to physical problems. Maybe he has (as the popular expression went in the post-war years) "outgrown his strength" and the boy has bit of catching up to do before he can realize his talent.

Don't agree with this at all. I see him as being more of a 'target-man' than a poacher, from what I've seen of him he plays predominantly with his back to the goal. Any goals he scores are just a bonus really.

If Kermorgant doesn't score another goal again this season I won't be concerned, as long as he's linking up play and setting up our other players I'm happy, as first and foremost that's his job.

To be fair to Hulse, I don't think he is match sharp yet. Little football over a period of time will do that, and the fact he is getting in positions suggests he will soon become a valuable asset.

Hulse, BWP, Kermo and Fuller is a strong Championship strike force. Now if only they can be provided the service on a more consistent basis..

Agree to an extent, but you have exaggerated to make your point. If someone is one of two strikers in a 4-4-2 or the only striker in a 4-5-1 he does need to chip in with a reasonable contribution of goals or the team will probably struggle. And if someone is playing three tiers down with teammates who are generally a cut above their opponents then he should be scoring steadily, even if not prolifically.

The truth is none of us know what is happening at Newport, what their pattern of play is and how well or badly Smith is doing. My point is that whatever he is doing there doesn't prove anything, same as pre-season games don't prove anything. He has scored two in two. So has Hulse, against two of the top Championship sides, but we are all aware he is only a stopgap.

I think it made a great difference to Hulse having Haynes up front with him working his socks off. To be fair he's hardly played any football recently, and is only a stopgap until Fuller's fit. If Haynes stays fit and keeps playing the way he did on Tuesday there's no way The Doctor can drop him for anybody.
