It was terrible from Naughton and there is an angle there I'd not seen and he perhaps didn't have as much time as I first thought. However, watching from the beginning, if we're slating Naughton for a pass putting him under pressure, and he was surrounded, then you have to equally slate Lloris for passing to him in the first place. On that left side of the pitch is 3 dark shirts and one white, how could he not see the right half of the pitch had 3 unmarked white shirts to play out to. Looking at it, the big picture is its a catalogue of errors initiated by a poor piece of distribution, as he wasn't under any pressure with the first kick out, you have to say Naughton had to be in the worst position possible to be given the ball, just as it was for Lloris to be given it back.
Definitely Naughton was the major culprit, unfortunately the repercussions from this mistake by both of them is liable to have far more damaging impact on Hugo than Kyle. This might be the incident that leads to Lloris leaving the club, as I fear he won't be playing against City, and the situation will deteriorate further between Lloris and Spurs.
see this is where i completely agree with you on this. Although Naughton could have knocked it out for a throw in and did have time, despite Lloris' pretty shocking initial pass, this is something that I've noticed already with Lloris. - It's all a little too clever. I don't know whether it's the way they are brought up playing football in france, but a lot of outfield passes he makes tend to be over complicated. So far, I've seen overarm throws which have gone to congested areas, and floating chipped passes that have encouraged pressure. In nearly every situation so far, they've been ok, but on thurs, it could be said that the initial distribution caused us to be punished (indirectly). - This i'm putting down to nerves as well though, but it's something that needs a bit of a tweak. it will come with more game time with his colleagues. Players' don't get the amount if time on the ball in this league and when Lloris starts playing Prem games, he's going to have kick that out of his game. (excuse the pun).
Unfortunately it wasn't. Modric was always going to go and van der Vaart wanted to move back with his family. The Maribor goal was extremely unfortunate, but it was two players who haven't had much football recently, which showed. A poor mistake by both of them, but it didn't cost us, thankfully.
Fair comments Roo on Hugo's distribution, I think like a lot of foreigners coming into our game they don't quite realise how little time you get in the Prem. HOWEVER, AVB like a lot of foreign coaches, and indeed new British coaches like Rodgers, want the ball played out from the back, and are willing to take risks to maintain that philosophy. It's not something I particularly agree with, I'm old school and back Hansen's dictum 'if in doubt launch it' and the old classic, 'they can't score from Row Z,. However, a lot of modern strategy says 'yes they can' because it's then their throw in, their ball, their possession. If Lloris is to be our No. 1, hell have to solve this issue as best he can with AVB, coaches, etc. However, he may never make it with our club now. If I was him, I'd find a continental club more suited to his style, and get out of the Lane asap. I fear the damage done is now terminal between Lloris and our manager.
We were always told never to play a square ball in defence - yet you see it all the time in the Premier League!
