I find it really disheartening that everyone has to advise to move away from Hull, even though I know it is sensible decent advice. What is happening to the city and local economy? I know for a fact that in my field, (Technology/IT based) I wouldn't have the opportunities over there that I do in Manchester and the North-West in general, (even Leeds appears to be lagging in that respect).
Well that's what I meant - Hull isnt really commutable to anywhere but if you move to Leeds you've also got Sheff, Manchester, Bratfud, Wakey, Huddersfield and all the small associated towns plus 2 of the countries biggest employers in Asda and Morrisons on your doorstep. It just improves your chances ten fold.
Its my first time of long-term unemployment.I've always manage to grab something pretty quickly after leaving a job. I can deffinitly say it forms your character. I can safely say when I get a job, i'll appreciate it so much more.
This. I'm 22 and I've now been in my marketing job for 6 months and moving to Leeds was a great decision. Hull is very limited for the media, marketing and journalism industry so I took a punt to look elsewhere and it's paid off. It's worth considering if you ask me!
I live in Reading. Apparently the unemployment rate is 3.4%. Yes it is pricey to live but there is plenty of work. I see signs in several retail premises recruiting for staff on my walk to the train station in the morning - the shopping centre has 30 open positions http://www.theoracle.com/jobs, there is a large Tesco distribution centre opening next year with 1000 jobs http://www.tesco-careers.com/home/about-us/our-company/distribution. There are plenty of jobs in Reading and the surrounding area. This is just an example - you can move away and be successful. There is work out there and you will find it. Sadly the employment situation is not so good in Hull. I sometimes dream that one day I will be a successful businessman and will come back to Hull to invest as I truly believe in the area and the quality of the people.
I'll be watching this thread with great interest. I sincerely hope something turns up for you. Since leaving Hull when i was 18, i've lived in 11 different cities, and have had to find work in all of them. It does knock your confidence, so i know how unpleasant it is to be" inbetween" jobs. If, as you say, your willing to do more or less anything, are there no Agencies that have temping vacancies?, or Bar work perhaps? Good luck with your endeavours !!
I registered with five or six agencies, but nothing. I've even tried to get into Greencore, but they're really slack now.
It may be an extreme suggestion but if I could advise any young kid in Hull what to do I would tell them to get a trade - electrician, plumber etc. they are in short supply in many places - and in Sydney you don't see any unemployed tradies - plus the beaches and climate are slightly better than east yorkshire's...
I'm in desperate need to Casual. After getting to team leader at clearanswer they paid me wrong and then sacked me cos I kicked off about it after trying to recover £600 over 2 months, went to another sales job and a similar thing happened. I'm now living by myself, having troubles paying my rent and no ****er seems willing to take a punt on a young lad who'll try his hand at anything. Job centre isn't helpful at all, canny find anything at all, registered at several different agencies but surprise surprise, no work. Seriously dunno what I'm gonna do but I need work and need it now to stop myself from getting evicted.
The other answer is get to College/Uni and get some qualifications. It's ok doing short term dead end jobs in your 20's, i know i did plenty of them but you dont wanna be doing them in your 40's or 50's. I dont work anywhere near as hard now as when i was concreting and laying tarmac. Get an education mate, theres no jobs, be ready for when there are some.
Hull, well England in general is ****. I have a job that takes me to Texas 3 months a year. I have a few ties in England but nothing to hold me there really. I earn enough during them 3 months to have 9 months off. IF you can get a job like mine. OLM was advertising a job on here not long ago.
A mate of mine is.opening a new business in scarborough - car franchise. He's advertising for jobs of anyone is interested
I asked on here if anyone wanted some self employed work, based in Hull. Not one enquiry. I ended up giving the job to someone from Wigan. In fact the very reason for me staying in Scarborough (on another thread) was because I had to do a days work in the area, because I can't get anyone to do the job. Three visits Rotherham, Keithley and Scarborough. I drove up from Southampton to do them. Oddly the other area where I struggle to find people is Newcastle. To be honest I have tried for ages and don't bother now and I'm gutted by it.
to pass the time, why don't you work in charity shop ? A few days a week, better than nothing, get you out of the house.
Thats a good idea. I'm sure the are always asking for volunteers at HRI, be great experience plus the added benefit of nurses everywhere!! Fill ya boots. O/T Is that club at HRI still there?? Cant remember the name but went to some great parties there, straight back to the nurses quarters afterwards-oh are they still there??
Kempton, Im not a debt collector, I'm a Certificated Bailiff and High Court Enforcement Officer. Its one of those jobs that is often misunderstood. I hate the bully types who just collect debts. Times have changed, the job is not what it looks like from the outside. The modern way is to work with people in difficulties not to harrass them into payment. 80% of the cases that I deal with should never be at the enforcement stage. I have to establish why the debt hasnt been paid and report back. It isnt for everybody, but is no worse than driving a taxi. Its using people skills and is not for those who have big ego's or muscles.
