As Barton adjusts to life in France, he looks at the Premier League and has some ‘painful’ admissions to make about his former club Newcastle United. Speaking to Jonathan Northcroft, the midfielder reveals his thoughts on the club:

“As much as it pains me to say it, Newcastle are one of the most forward-thinking clubs in the Premier League.

“There are a lot of different ways they can do things, but he (Ashley) runs it as a business. They don’t pay over the odds and they say well we want to buy players with residual value.

“I’ve been really vocal about some of the things they have done in the past, but you’ve got to take your hat off to them.

“Two years ago they were the laughing stock of football, they’re not so much now.”

The praise didn’t stop there from the controversial player. Barton voiced a glowing report of the current Newcastle manager Alan Pardew:

“For me he is the best English coach I’ve worked with, by a considerable distance.

“He is a very good man manager. I know he fancies himself as a bit of a looker, I mean most Cockneys are that way inclined.

“But he is a really amicable guy. A really good man manger, tactically very astute.”

Love his comment about Cockneys. How do you immobilise an aggressive Cockney? Stick a mirror in front of his face.

Really liked Joey as a player, always gave 100%, pity he couldn't control his mouth as well as he controlled the ball though.

He was his own worst enemy.

I don't think he's changes his views on Newcastle, I think he's just changed his view on how the club is being run.

Good player for us who has always spoken well of the club and fans if not the owners. Nice words from Nolan too saying after Sunday he'll go back to wishing the best for us.

To be fair some of Bartons criticisms were warranted, he just didn't go about it the right way. The owner has upped his game considerably since the early days. I don't think the success they enjoy now means they were right back then, they weren't. But equally you can't use the past to judge them now and its a mature outlook to be able to recognise it.

Still has a few anger issues (not a thug though).
