Watching Rod Stewart blubbering at the end of last nights Celtic v Barcelona match took me back to the 1969 FA Cup Final and our defeat to Man City. What reduced me to tears was the fact that my younger brother was a Man City fan and was gloating all over the house. When did the boys in Blue last make you cry?
when they lost to Watford lol I dont tend to cry and dont think i ever have about football ... plenty of bad moods and swear words though.
About 3 years ago against someone I can't remember (quiz for you: Sheenan got sent off, Fryatt scored a penalty and finished 1-1 at the Walkers Stadium - who were the opposition?) and was in queue for a drink at half time when a running kid tripped over and headbutted me in the balls. Was in tears then.
Haha Alan Sheehan, whatever happened to him? I remember him on FM, he was ridiculously good at free kicks (19/20 or something), and I was telling all my mates how he was going to be the next best thing...
Oh and in response to the actual question, I've never physically cried as at the end of the day, it is just football. But my saddest moment is probably when we drew 0-0 away at Stoke and were officially relegated to League One http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/eng_div_1/7368631.stm Reading that back... "Leicester's midfield struggled to get up to support Howard and Barry Hayles in attack, who were left to feed off scraps."... No wonder we had trouble scoring goals!!!!
That's the game - Hume was the scorer and it was in 2005! http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/eng_div_1/4516188.stm Guess that traumatic experience affected my memory.
Relegation to league 1 get a tear. I used to embarrassed though when I would make my Liverpool and Arsenal mates sit through our performances under Holloway. It's incomprehensible how bad were then. The lowest point came again Palace, when Barry Hayles accidently shinned in a winner right at the death. We were so poor that night I metaphorically cried.
It's weird you mention that actually, I was exactly the same, some of the performances I made my mates sit through, and it was just embarrasing for me. And I remember perfectly that Barry Hayles winner against Palace! Wow, I don't miss those days...
i have a number of matches where the emotions were high - and for different reasons - but i didn't blub! FA Cup semi final losing to Liverpool at Villa Park FA Cup semi final losing to Spurs at Villa Park (by now I don't much like Villa Park!) Play-off final at Wembley when we came back to beat the Sheep Worriers and win at Wembley for the first time in seven attempts (didn't like Wembley much up until then) Bruno bundling the ball, the whole of the Middlesbro defence, two hot dog vendors and a porta-loo over the line for a last minute equaliser in the league Cup Final at Wembley Scruffy Steve shooting us to our first real trophy in the modern era in the replay ...
Again I've never cried over football, but I remember being in a real state of shock when we went down to League One. Before the Sheff Wed game at home, I was utterly convinced we win that and stay up. So to get relegated just a week later was a waking nightmare, particularly the way it happened (Southampton winning a tough match, us getting a thoroughly decent point at promoted Stoke, we had the third best defense and went down with the highest points ever etc). I was a bit too inexperienced and arrogant I suppose to fully appreciate the success we had 1996-2000. I truly believed it was our divine right to win those trophies and finishes top ten every year and that it was only the start of a great period for us that would go on forever. Little did I realise...I think our next promotion to the Premier League will be the best feeling I've ever had in footie. I really hope it's this season! I may well shed a tear then...
After the Sheffield Wed game on walking back from the game,we were passed by a stream of coaches carrying there fans home. With out exception every coach had there fans jeering and taking the piss out of us and the other city fans. Loved it when they went down the following year!
I was a sobbing mess when we were relegated to League 1 - not right after the game but as soon as it sank in I was really upset. A mate of mine tried to take the piss about it and i just couldn't take it, stormed off like a little bitch!
.. one of my stranger recollections .. the impact on the old BBC 606 when we dropped from the Championship list down to the League 1 list ... really brought it home ... very humbling ...
