Manchester City host Tottenham Hotspur at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday 11th November 2012 (KO 13:30) in the 11th round of Premier League matches in the 2012-13 season.

City come into the match in third place in the Premier League on 22 points with Spurs in sixth place on 17 points.

This will be the 145th time the two teams have met.

The first meeting came on 16th January 1909 in the FA Cup 1st round (today's 3rd round) at Hyde Road in Ardwick (City's original name) in a match which Spurs won 4-3.

The first League meeting came in the First Division in December 1910 at White Hart Lane and resulted in a 1-1 draw. Walter Tull, who was the first black outfield footballer to play League football scored Tottenham's goal. City won the reverse fixture in January 1911 2-1.

All the League meetings between Spurs and City up to season 1934-35 took place in the First Division.

The clubs were drawn together in the 1913-14 FA Cup 2nd round with City wining 2-1 at Hyde Road (City would move to Maine Road in 1923 and stay there for the next 80 years) and also met in the 1921-22 FA Cup 3rd round with FA Cup holders Tottenham beating City 2-1 at White Hart Lane.

The only League meetings between the clubs outside the Top Flight took place either side of the Second World War with City winning both Second Division matches in the 1938-39 season and taking three points out of four off Spurs in the Second Division matches played in 1946-47.

Spurs and City resumed their Top Flight meetings in the 1951-52 season.

The clubs contested the 1956 FA Cup Semi-Final at Villa Park with City winning 1-0 with a goal scored by Bobby Johnstone. City would go on to win the FA Cup that season, beating Birmingham City 3-1 in the Final at Wembley.

Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City contested the centenary FA Cup Final in 1981. The match finished in a 1-1 draw after extra time after Tommy Hutchison had put City ahead but also scored an unfortunate own goal.

The replay was the first to be played at Wembley and Spurs won 3-2 with a brace from Ricky Villa and a goal from Garth Crooks. City goals were scored by Steve MacKenzie and Kevin Reeves. Ricky Villa's second goal was voted Goal of the Century and the match is one of the best remembered Finals of all-time.

The first of three Football League Cup meetings came in the 1992 3rd Round with Spurs winning 1-0 at Maine Road with a Vinny Samways goal. Tottenham also won the other two matches - a 4th Round match in 2003 3-1 and a 5th round match in 2007 2-0.

City had an amazing comeback in the 2004 FA Cup 4th Round replay at White Hart Lane after going three goals down to goals from Ledley King, Robbie Keane and Christian Ziege in the first half. City, who had been reduced to ten men after Joey Barton received a second yellow card, scored four second half goals from Sylvain Distin, Paul Bosvelt, Shaun Wright-Phillips and Jonathan Macken to win a memorable game 4-3.

Both Spurs and City were founder-members of the Premier League, although City have only competed in 16 of the 21 seasons played in the competition so far, while Spurs have been one of seven ever-present clubs.

Spurs have generally had the upper hand during this era with nineteen wins to City's five wins and five matches drawn. In fact, City have only won three times in the past 17 meetings between the clubs in all competitions.

In 2009-10, Spurs did the 'double' over City with a 3-0 win at the Lane with goals from Nico Kranjcar (2) and Jermain Defoe followed by a vital 1-0 end of season win at Eastlands, which secured fourth place and Champions League football for Spurs thanks to a Peter Crouch goal.

The 2010-11 fixtures featured an opening day of the season match at White Hart Lane which finished in a 0-0 draw and a late season game at Eastlands which City won 1-0 thanks to a Peter Crouch own goal.

During the summer of 2011, Spurs secured the services of Manchester City's Togo striker Emmanuel Adebayor on a season's loan.

The match at White Hart Lane last season ended in a comprehensive 5-1 win to Manchester City with Bosnian striker Edin Dzeko scoring four goals for the visitors, who were 2-0 up at half-time. Sergio Aguero also scored for City while Tottenham's goal came from Younes Kaboul.

The match at Etihad Stadium in January 2012 resulted in a 3-2 win for Manchester City. After a goalless first half, City scored twice through Samir Nasri and Joleon Lescott before Spurs made things level with goals from Jermain Defoe on the hour mark and Gareth Bale five minutes later. But a last minute penalty from Mario Balotelli secured the points for the home side.

Emmanuel Adebayor made his move permanent to Spurs during the summer of 2012.

Overall, Spurs have won 57 games, City have won 53 games and the remaining 34 matches played have been drawn.

    Cheers THFC 6061 <ok>

Going to this one, my second time at the Etihad.

Really hope we keep the 4-4-2 formation (though I don't think Andre will, which will be a huge disappointment).

    Would love to see:
Lloris; Walker/ Naughton, Dawson, Caulker, Vertonghen; Lennon, Sandro, Huddlestone, Bale; Adebayor, Defoe.

Subs: Friedel, Walker/ Naughton, Gallas, Carroll, Sigurddson, Dempsey, Falque.

If I'm honest I'm not expecting a win, especially if we set up with a 4-5-1 with Dempsey in for Adebayor as our attacking threat is massively depleted.

I reckon we can get a draw though, City haven't been impressive and hopefully the Maribor game gave some much needed confidence back.

2-2. Bale and Adebayor (it's on the cards for Ade, isn't it?!?!)

Another post from THFC6061 with no effort whatsoever, I see <laugh>

    haha, cheers again mate <ok>

at the moment, I think I'd go for:

    Lloris
    walker Caulker Verts Naughton
    Sandro Carroll
    Lennon Ade Bale
    Defoe.

however i do have my reservations about Naughton and could be tempted to put Verts at LB with Dawson in the centre. Just not sure how he'd cope against city's strikers. But then again, Daws very rarely (if ever) lets us down.

Didn't realise michael brown played for city. That must have been just after he left NSYNC. <laugh>

I'd stick with the 4-4-2, but if Sandro's back as the rumours suggest, then I'd stick him and Caulker back in and move Vertonghen to left-back.
Lloris; Walker, Dawson, Caulker, Vertonghen; Lennon, Sandro, Carroll, Bale; Adebayor, Defoe.

I think Villas-Boas will stick with the 4-2-3-1 and take less risks, though. We've been pretty good away from home so far, so it's understandable.
Friedel; Walker, Gallas, Caulker, Vertonghen; Sandro, Huddlestone; Lennon, Dempsey, Bale; Defoe.

notso's just pointed out that Sandro is unavailable, PNP.

and I pray that our lineup is not the latter in which you mention, although i think it's highly likely.

Roo and PNP, you'd start Carroll v City!! <yikes> far too lightweight, can't tackle and Toure would just swat him away like a fly.

I'm going by media reports, Notso.
    http://www.london24.com/sport/totte...city_ace_could_start_at_former_club_1_1687299
There are a few others reporting the same thing.

    People said that about Modric.
Carroll's far more mobile than Huddlestone and I'd like to see him given a chance.

Quite easily the extra man in MF can double up either side as necessary. On the other thread I put that last City formation v Swansea, well that teamsheet of theirs had the flexibility to flit between 422 and 433.

<laugh> Bale will not be left by them whatever happens. The other consideration here is that although we look good at home 442, the Etihad is a much bigger pitch with even more ground to cover...dangerous imo. <ok>

Maicon, Silva and Lescott are all in full training and with 2 sessions left before Sunday according to Platt on SSN just now, they are all in contention to return providing they get through those remaining TS's.

I think we've got very little Choice, Notso.

Name your 4231 and your 442. it's bloody difficult.

Modric got swatted about in his first season with us, plus he was a bit older, and still took a year to man up to the physicality of the PL. Carroll is a boy who needs to get a years gym work before tussling with some of the brutes in this league.

I'd like to see him given a chance later on, he can buzz around some tired legs in the 2nd half, but start in an away game of this magnitude, bit early for that imo.

I think Carroll had a bit of a chance last season, then played in the Championship for a while in the 2nd half of the campaign, so he's already got a bit of an idea of what needs to be done.
It'd be a tough test for him, without a doubt, but I don't think Villas-Boas will pick him anyway, so it's a bit academic.

if he can play, it's brilliant news.

I'd be tempted to suggest something like this:

    Lloris
    walker Caulker Dawson Naughton
    Sandro Vertonghen
    Lennon Ade Bale
    Defoe

...awaiting the massacre of replies to this... <laugh>
