Quit PISKIE that is HALF the definition and you know it. I am not going to argue with you on this AGAIN. As far as I am concerned you have lost this debate because you are distorting facts to suit your point of view. Not good enough.
That PISKIE is NOT the OED That is an online dictionary using oxford in it's name to gain respect. You really need to check your sources before making such definitive statements. I have already copied and pasted the OED definition twice but here it is again: Yid /derog. 0jɪd; neutral (among Yiddish-speakers) 0ji:d/ noun. slang (chiefly derog. & offensive). L19. [ORIGIN Yiddish from Middle High German Jude, Jüde ult. from Latin Judaeus Jew noun.] A Jew. The OED is not available online free you have to buy it, which I have. TWO Definitions one offensive and one NEUTRAL End of argument.
The Police disagree with you, Lidls. I wouldn't take anything that Peter Herbert says at face value, either. He reported a crime that he had absolutely no knowledge of, for a start.
It's not the end of the argument It's use is only neutral when used by Yiddish speakers, otherwise it's a derogatory term.
I do that - I regularly phone up the Met trying to implicate Margaret thatcher in something but they never listen
Now you have to define Yiddish Speakers and a good lawyer could make a case for Spurs fans on this basis. No court of law could say that any one person has to use the language of their birth exclusively. The Spurs fans are speaking yiddish in their chants.
Posted this on our board lads: Essentially, I think Peter Herbert is a self-publicizing tosser who is only using Football as a vehicle for a particular agenda. If I call myself a "****" at a game, that's not in reference to anyone else clearly and I'm either taking the piss out of myself, or else removing the stigma of the word in association by using it in a positive way, as with the Spurs chant. If some of the Jewish community are offended by using the term, I suggest they don't understand the issue at all. The term has been used as an insult for a long time against Spurs fans and Jews in general, and the Spurs fans proud of their Jewish heritage are clearly showing what little impact such stupid chanting has on them! I think fans will start a new campaign soon, called Kick Peter Herbert Out of Football! Anyway, have a good day lads.
And it'd be very easy to portray a history of anti-Semitic abuse in the case of certain clubs, which establishes a pattern. The actual chant of Yids or Yiddos from opposition supporters isn't the problem here, as it doesn't really happen. References to WWII and the Holocaust are. Baddiel's unwilling to address the offensive behaviour of "the whole back half of the Matthew Harding Stand", yet he's fine with going after those showing solidarity with their fellow Spurs fans. The idea that stopping Spurs fans from using these chants will stop opposition fans from using their offensive ones is stupid, as ours started in response to theirs. There seems to have been some attempt to flip it round, for some reason.
So they could but not with hissing and reference to gas chambers. Simply calling Spurs Fans Yids is not an insult.
That's fantastic You're right though - it seems to be this bloke just picking up on random things that he thinks might offend and then pushing them through. All of this just to give hiself a hugh profile and get some bigger cases
Take more responsibility for my response?? WTF are you on about now? You sound just like one of those ranting, raving members of the socialist league of loonies that infested certain parts of London. Your sort of "education" I think you'll find George Orwell wrote a book about!
Believe it or not, I do actually agree with you. I just think that you're on very shaky ground legally when you allow one person to chant 'Yid' and not another. Being a supporter of a certain club isn't a rationale for it either. As I've mentioned, Spurs aren't a 'Jewish' club, they have some Jewish supporters, as do other clubs. But hypothetically if someone were to claim that they were chanting the name in yiddish and didn't mean it offensively, then there's nothing to stop anybody else claiming the same, regardless of their intent.
i.e. making accusations of me wumming is lazy and inaccurate . . The rest of your post is just you ranting
