The sculpture, which lends the exhibition its name, is a three-and-a-half metre tall stylised image of the Pope in a state of sexual arousal with his hand firmly on the shoulder of two little boys. The statue has also been decorated with a Swastika-style crucifix. please log in to view this image Critics claim the work resembles more a fridge-freezer than the leader of the Roman Catholic church. Mr van Weereld said he wanted to call attention to the relatively high incidence of *****philia in single sex institutions of such as the Catholic church. He said: âThere are four symbolisms in the sculpture, which are all based on fact - although some are dusted over by the church. âThere is high incidence of *****philia, the pope did spend a good part of his formative years in the Hitlerjugend and the Wehrmacht, the church is friendly to the outside, but not necessarily within the hierarchy and they do tend to cover up things.â Provocative Skye, Lochaber and Bade-noch MSP Dave Thompson said freedom of artistic expression and the right of people to have views was something to be valued. But Mr Thompson added: âI think we have to be very careful we donât use that to cross certain lines which could deliberately provoke people and insult them. And this sculpture appears to be particularly provocative and distressing.â He said he thought the artist had misunderstood the Christian faith, which he said was about âloving others as we love ourselvesâ. Mr Thompson said: âAlthough the installation is abstract, and it may not be obvious what it is supposed to depict, the sculptorâs explanation becomes part of the work of art.â
Say what you like about The Roman Catholic Church. They bring it on themselves and lots of young boys as well. Should be outlawed.
The Christian faith is about “loving others as we love ourselves”? I must have missed that memo. As did all the soldiers that went on the Crusades to spread the love.
I think my main criticism of this would be the obvious missed chance to tack on a big visible dong. I like the two eyes for a face thing but this could've been much more controversial and in yer face if it just had a massive oversized walloper on it (preferably with some sort of young boy slurping it up).
Medro's obsession with peadophiles and his hatred of the catholic church are a dead giveaway that he was bummed as a young boy. There have been loads of stories of peeps raping spazzies in their care homes <MedrogotSaviled>
I know I might sound like ER but modern art really is sh1te. Take a dump on the floor and call it an "installation" piece to represent the struggle of the inner soul and twats will queue around the block to have a look at it, rub their goatee beards and go along with the hoax. It's the emperor's new clothes and a sh1t on the floor is still just a sh1t on the floor.
Not if the toaly on the floor invites you to ponder the nature of existance, it isn't. Hmm, is it an allegory for the futility of living matter? Is it a post-modernist attempt at proto-dadaism to make me consider the impact my waste has on the environment? Is it a big jobby, a wee jobby? Jobbies are thought provoking art in their own right - they're only used by artists so often as an easy way to involve infinite recurring themes.
