Arent the Mclaren duo recognised as the best on the field? The top 3 drivers are obviously Alonso, Hamilton and Vettel, but i would definately say Button is much better than Webber - and Massa for that matter.
You can live in hope if thats what you want to see but sadly for you I have a good feeling about the Merc+Hamilton setup
If he was to do something special, and prove himself, he could have done it in the 5 years at the same team, he has won 1 WDC basically scraping it after Glock moved over in Brasil. The McLaren team have more or less provided the foundations of a great car every season, 2009 being the exception, until later it was a challenging car, so Lewis has always had the opportunity to do something with the car. So going to Mercedes, which is even worse... wasting more valuable years. You can only get worse.
Well I don't agree with your assessment of Hamilton's career so far but I think we're both a bit biased where Lewis is concerned. That said, I've been thinking about his move to Mercedes and what it may mean for his career, how F1 history may come to see him. I've nothing astounding to say really but I think it will go one of two ways: 1. He'll go down in history as a mercurial could've been: brilliantly fast, exciting to watch but lacking the mentality to 'do a Vettel', if Vettel does indeed have a Schumacher-esque set-up around him now. In this case, rather than being seen by the 'real' F1 fans as the lightweight's choice, he'll become the romantic racer type figure while Vettel will be all about stats and success. 2. He'll be part of a Mercedes renaissance and become a multiple WDC just as he always believed he would be. But, of course, barring a miracle, this will not happen next year and I expect Vettel will up his tally to four unless Ferrari or Lotus (a slim outside chance) are able to up their games. Jenson will also fancy his chances but he'll need to 'find some grip' first. Either way, next season won't be Lewis's year but neither do I think he will end up as a footnote in F1 history.
The odds are stacked against him, he does have Mercedes big money as a plus to be honest. If he pulls it off, it will be very good for Britain and F1 in general, if not... he is another JPM.
He's a bit too famous to be the new Montoya but, yeah, that kind of mercurial figure was what I had in mind as a possibility. Plus, he does have a WDC to his name. Incidentally, in between Senna and Lewis, chronologically, JPM was my favourite driver
Should never discount someone before they've had a chance to prove themselves. Prejudgement often proves to be incorrect in life in general.
