I asked right at the start was it a projection and was told yes , so it might as well be witchcraft .
I think it should be symptomatic but then what do I know I never went to Yale I went to a run of the mill Russell group University for my Masters.
Sums him up pretty perfectly. Literally just made 9 or 10 posts about something he literally couldn't see or know about with the same blind degree of certainty as always.
I know, but it did get pretty surreal for a while there. It was (almost) worth having him on the thread.
In the style of GMI I'll just carry on on a separate post. This will stay with me for a long time. Thank you, everyone, but I must crash now. Goodnight, and may your gods go with you.
Great spreadsheet Mikey. I do have a challenge for you on a mathematical basis (not trying to be an arse) Do you think that the alternate hypothesis is true, I.e. the teams that are in the top half are there because they have played the lesser teams like Saints and QPR?
Well noted. The table ten games into the season can't be a true reflection of which teams are better than which others. Maybe another method would be to repeat it using the positions that teams finished last season. I'm sure a similar result will come out though, and we have a lot of mid-table/relegation battling teams coming up. PS Great stats work team. Maybe a standard deviation or chi-squared analysis might help
I think at some stage we have to look at the table & say it actually does give us an idea of the teams that will struggle, & the teams that will do well. Obviously theres always changes, the obligatory late runner, the team that drops off so bad they get sucked in at the wrong time. But, I do think, its safe to say we will be involved in a relegation battle for the entire season. Just hope we are still in with a fighting chance come May. Woke up feeling ultra realistic this morning, hope it doesn't offend anyone.
Nothing wrong with realism HR! Better than GoM with his constant pessimism. I still think though with the addition of a couple of defenders we will pull away from trouble. I think we need three wins during Nov and Dec to keep ius in with a shout. Games all look much more winnable than our first set!
Very true, Saint in enemy territory. The six points from beating both us and QPR this season could see you jump from 17th to 6th (a sensitivity analysis would be useful!). Interesting that QPR had two initial games against teams currently in the bottom half - how we could have done with just a few of those at the start to allow us to bed in! A useful exercise to further Mikey's useful spreadsheet would be to apply weights to the points accrued depending on the position of the team that were played. This would give an indication of how well teams have done considering the league position of their opposition at the time they played them.
Ha took me a while to get that! i've battened down the hatches what with the weather to keep the enemy at bay! Given that the table doesn't lie at the end of the season, i think the idea of applying it to the previous seasons position would give a more realistic weighting than the table that does lie (!?) over the opening months of the season.
That may but it won't compensate for players purchased or getting older and therefore less able to perform satisfactorily.
