Shame he still lives in the 60s, thinks he was in the Small Faces and all his songs sound identical.

I'm with Bummy on that. I always thought he was an over rated pretentious twat tbh. He's the Apple product of the music world, looks nice but you only want one to look cool not cos it's any good.

This couldn't be further from the truth i'm afraid. Only someone who hasn't heard his last ten albums, could possibly say this. He's the only muso, who when been interviewed about his latest Lp,only wants to talk about his next.

Anyone who thinks Weller isn't a talented singer/songwriter is probably tone deaf.

No, it's called having a different opinion to you. I happen to like invention and progressiveness in my music instead of continually looking back for my inspiration and simply rehashing the same old stuff without pushing any boundaries.

    But that's just me.

There's plenty of music I don't like, that I can at least appreciate is well written and well performed.

And suggesting that all his music sounds the same is simply inaccurate.

''Invention and progressiveness'' eh ? Bcc,his latest album is heavily inspired by German techno pop. You really need to listen before passing judgement.

So youre saying he's copying someone else?

And just out of interest do you listen to new albums by people from whom you have never liked anything they have done in 30 years?

I think you'll find German Techno Pop is a genre, not a person.

Yes I do, I think he's **** and only surpassed by Ocean ****ing Colour Scene in the pantheons of dogshitness. Would you go out and listen to the new Westlife album or would you assume it was more of the turgid nonsense you had heard time and time again? When did he EVER break ground?

I have never even remotely liked a single song of his that I have ever heard and they are all so retrospective that is astonishes me that people like him. But hey - they do and I havent said any of you are wrong for liking him so why are you saying I'm wrong?

Only one? Are you sure? I bet if you said to Weller himself that he is "the only person who has written great songs consistently over a sustained period of time" and "he is the greatest songwriter this country has ever produced" he would piss his own tight pants laughing.

To be fair, people like Elvis Costello can also lay claim. But Ben is nearly right. There arent many.

Agree with BCC on this one.

Watched Weller last night in an impressive array of knitwear and subtly shifting hairstyles

But it was basically a case off S.S.D.D.

Soul comes from within not off the peg.

Weller is only a good song writer if you like the crappy dirges he produces. Judging by the charts and the other usual methods of gauging popularity, I'd say he falls well short. Just because a handful of you think hes the messiah doesn't mean he is you know.

Lennon and McCartney were pretty good song writers too you know, as was Noel Gallagher, Costello, Adele, Muse, Dave Gahan and personally I love Alex Turners stuff, as well as Morrissey's, and even if you don't like him, Gary Barlow is also a very good song writer. Seems there's actually lots of great song writers from the UK. Decrying any of these as non proper or serious musicians is frankly, stupid.

Also, good job laying credit for songs on one person, I'm sure Bruce Foxton would be thrilled. :headbang:
