The hypocrisy is about them saying they will ban the fan who made the gesture for life while keeping their racist on the field as Captain.

The hypocrisy is Mikel not supporting Ferdinand in his case when he heard the racial insult but kept quiet.

I don't think that's why Mikel stayed quiet. But that's a fine comeback.

Great to have you on board my friend. <ok>

Guys, this has all been taken out of context. The fan was simply saying to Welbeck "No Danny I didn't make this gesture towards you."

The thing is, sadly this type of incident happens all of the time, throughout football. Not just Serbia!

As I mentioned earlier in the thread, no club can honestly say that they haven't got this type of behaviour latent within their support base.

The difference here is that the recent context of race allegations from players has heightened the magnitude of this, and rightly so, it will be dealt with robustly.

Much like the hooliganism of the 70s and 80s - the press give this the oxygen to propegate - whilst many clubs seek to 'airbrush' this out of their history.

The big concern for me is whether this will escalate - what Stuart Hall calls 'the amplification spiral' - where exaggerated or sensationalised coverage breeds more of the same.

Don't be surprised if the press resurect from the 70s their 'League of Shame' - a sure fire way to stir the pot further.
