America and Africa have tons of resources, look at all the gold, oil, gas, land etc that America has, only when Europeans emigrated there did it take off economically, in Africa it has stagnated due to several reasons.

Survival of the fittest, the Europeans were the most dominant and the most intelligent humans so that's why the Native Americans are almost extinct.

And look how the majority of civilisation in America is on the west or east coast. And here's Africa:

I don't understand what point you're trying to make. You say that the population in Europe was near the sea and that contributed to their success. The population in Africa is situated near the coastline in that picture you just sent me, so they should be as evolved as us Europeans then, surely? Add the oil, gold, diamonds etc they should be a super rich Continent.

Well no, there's a ton of population inland but there's no light because they're poor as ****. As for those bits on the map that are all lit up, which as far as I can tell are Cairo (Egypt), pretty much all of Morocco and Tunisia, Lagos (Nigeria) and Johannesburg (South Africa), they are all pretty developed areas. Not all of Africa is absolutely terrible.

Fascinating debate. I really enjoyed reading that. Sometimes it's good to sit back and read differing views in a non-aggressive discussion, particularly when I have not enough true view or even knowledge of a subject to sensibly contribute. Makes a change to read a well argued two way debate handled in an intelligent manner with both people appearing to at least acknowledge the others point of view. Thought provoking too.

Simplification I know, but I think Europeans made greater technical/scientific advancements than Africa because of need. If there is plenty of food within easy reach and a warm climate, there is little drive to make progress in some areas. Northern Europeans were always fighting nature and once knowledge starts to roll it grows like a snowball.

Interestingly, China (a great civilization) was held back in chemical sciences because they never invented glass (an inert substance that permits experimentation). Their success in porcelain meant they never needed glass for everyday life.

It is interesting reading some of the posts on this one. A lot of people are chipping in with a lot of factual information. The Europeans became a dominant species simply because of the invention of steam and because of their use of steel and tin. The sea has always played an integral part of a continents history. Simply because it was quicker to travel down or up the coast. Let us also not forget the part that rivers played in the development of man.
This particular subject is one that I wish I had taken up at Uni as it has always held my interest even as a small boy.

Nah.......actually some of them were bigger then than they are now. I have been lucky enough to travel up and down some of the biggest rivers in the world I am pleased to say and seen some simply gob smacking things. From Crocs and venomous snakes swimming next to my canoe to being attacked by Hippo's. On one occasion I even had to get out of the boat and swim ashore in Croc infested waters!! At the time there were maybe about 5 or 6 watching me on the bank about 150 metres away some around 5 metres long not that I stayed around to measure them. Our dory had broken down and just refused to restart. I had my wife and my brother in there with me and no bloody oars!! As the tide was going out (they were equinine crocs by the way so were happy in salt or fresh water) we were being swept back out to the centre of the inlet. So someone had to get out and drag the boat back to shore. My brother wasn't going to do it he made that plain. My wife was stuck in the middle of the boat absolutely terrified so one had to do what one had to do!! A couple did wander over to investigate but by that time I was well clear including the boat. It wasn't the ones we saw on the bank either as they were still there!!
