Tottenham Hotspur host Wigan Athletic at White Hart Lane on Saturday 3rd November 2012 (KO 15:00) in a Matchday 10 Premier League game of the 2012-13 season.

Spurs come into the match in 4th place in the Table with 17 points, while Wigan are 15th in the Table on 8 points.

This will be the 16th time the two teams have met since Wigan Athletic gained promotion to the Premier League in the 2005-06 season.

Wigan Athletic were formed in 1932 after the demise of Wigan Borough and they gained their Football League status in 1978.

The first meeting between the two clubs came at Wigan's JJB Stadium in November 2005 and resulted in a 2-1 win for Spurs with goals from Robbie Keane and Edgar Davids. Wigan's goal was scored by Lee McCulloch late in the game.

The reverse fixture at White Hart Lane in February 2006 was a 2-2 draw with Tottenham's goals coming from Mido and Jermain Defoe and Wigan's from Andreas Johansson who had put the Lancashire club ahead twice.

Spurs also took four points off Wigan in the 2006-07 season with a 3-1 home win in November 2006 with goals from Jermain Defoe, Dimitar Berbatov and Aaron Lennon after Wigan's Henri Camara had put the Lattics ahead.

The points were shared in a 6-goal thriller at the JJB Stadium in April 2007 with a goal from Dimitar Berbatov and a Robbie Keane brace for Spurs while Emil Heskey, Leighton Baines and Paul Scharner were on the scoresheet for Wigan.

Tottenham Hotspur once again took four Premier League points off Wigan in the 2007-08 season with a 4-0 win at the Lane in November 2007. Jermaine Jenas scored twice and there were also goals for Aaron Lennon and Darren Bent.

Dimitar Berbatov scored for Spurs in the 1-1 draw at Wigan in April 2008 with Emil Heskey grabbing the equaliser.

The 2008-09 season saw Wigan take four points after a goalless draw at White Hart Lane and a 1-0 win in January 2009 thanks to Maynor Figueroa injury time winner.

Spurs beat Wigan in the FA Cup third round that season 3-1 with a brace of goals from Roman Pavlyuchenko and one from Luka Modric. Wigan's goal was scored by Henri Camara.

Maximum points were taken by Spurs in the 2009-10 season after a massive 9-1 home win in November 2009, which saw Jermain Defoe become only the third player after Alan Shearer and Andy Cole to score five goals in a Premier League match. There were also goals from Peter Crouch, Aaron Lennon, Niko Krajcar and David Bentley. Wigan's goal was scored by Paul Scharner. Amazingly enough, Spurs only led 1-0 at half-time and the eight goals scored in the second half by Spurs all came within 39 minutes.

Jermain Defoe's goal and a brace from Roman Pavlyuchenko saw Spurs to a 3-0 win at Wigan in February 2010.

2010-11 was another good one for Wigan, who took four points off Spurs. They won 1-0 at White Hart Lane in August 2010 with a second half goal from Hugo Rodallega. The match at the DW Stadium was goalless.

The away fixture earlier last season in September 2011 resulted in a 2-1 win from Spurs with goals from Rafael van der Vaart after just 3 minutes and Garerth Bale after 23 minutes. Wigan pulled a goal back through Mohamed Diame five minutes into the second half, but had Steve Gohouri sent off after receiving a second yellow card.

Spurs went two goals up from Gareth Bale and Luka Modric in the first half of the match at White Hart Lane in January 2012 and Bale added a third goal before James McArthur scored 10 minutes from time to make it Tottenham 3-1 Wigan.

Overall, Spurs have won 8 of the 15 matches played so far with Wigan winning 2 and 5 matches drawn.

    Cheers THFC 6061 <ok>

I have great memories of last seasons game vs Wigan - picked up £275 quid, had Bale first scorer and 3-1 scoreline :D

Hope to see a few changes from our Southampton game (although I'm confident AVB will name the same team!), the team I'd LIKE to see would be:

Lloris (really deserves a chance now)
Naughton (same as Lloris), Caulker, Dawson, Vertonghen
    Lennon, Sandro, Dembele*, Bale
    Ade*, Defoe

    * - If fit.

Subs: Friedel, Walker, Gallas, Hudd, Sigurdsson, Dempsey, Falque

I'm a fan of Townsend but Falque's performances over the last two games should earn a place on the bench.

Dempsey deserves to be dropped in my opinion, if Ade's fit he NEEDS game time and I still believe that we could see a great partnership between him and Defoe (there were signs earlier on last season). Dembele's been sorely missed and Walker has still been our weakest player, Naughton deserves a chance to impress. Would like Daws to start over Gallas but we all know that won't happen.

Going for 2-0. Cheeky feeling we may see a goal from Sandro and I think Defoe will grab the other - he likes Wigan!

I blinked when I read that we'd signed Dempsey. I'm not making any forecasts for the Wigan match, not after last night. Just because they lost to Bradford was it in the cup doesn't mean to say we'll beat them easily. We have scoring problems and something else somewhere. I'd like a big win here but I'm not too hopeful.

    ^^This.

completely agree on lineup SOS, for the reasons you mention. I also think it's imperative we switch to a 442 like you've alluded to. Sig and Demps have been poor so far, like you say. For this reason we need to try something else with the players who are performing. If Dembele and Ade are fit, they need to play. we're too obvious at the moment. it'll be nice to see how the oppositions defence copes with 2 strikers. so far this season, the formation has allowed all opposition to have 2 men marking Defoe (who doesn't have any aerial presence anyway). we need to try something different.

    Thanks mate,

Defoe and Ade worked well at the start of last season, it was just unfortunate for JD that we had Rafa at the time who was a superior all round player. Given time, I really think Ade and JD could be a great partnership. Defoe and Crouch were usually impressive and Ade is huge step up on Crouch for the "tall man role"

Anyone have a link to Andre's direct email? Maybe we could email him suggestions and observations! <laugh>

What games were they then? I can't remember Defoe and Ade ever working well last season.

Liverpool at home, they completely ripped them open. Won 4-0, Ade got 2 and JD got 1. Think the first game they had together too at Wolves away, where Ade scored on his debut they looked good linking up. I'm sure they had one other, may have been Wigan away? Though don't quote me on that. They were the only times I think where they started a match together and I felt they looked good. It's just Rafa and Ade were better/ the preferred option.

It's gotta be a better shout than Dempsey or Sig playing off Defoe at the moment. Lets not forget, Ade top notch was last year, not just for his goals but he got a number of assists too. With Defoe on form, I think he and Ade - given time - can become lethal.

HI SOS, I like your team, and I wanted Ade and Defoe to start v Chelsea, though I don't know if Ade was fit enough, but I felt he'd be a better choice than the jet-lagged Dempsey. It would have been hard for Ade to have performed worse than Clint on the day.

    Anyway, here's 'my team'

    Lloris
    Naughton, Gallas, Caulker, Vertonghen;
Lennon, Sandro, Hudd, Bale, Ade, Defoe

I prefer to think in terms of front six rather than 4-4-2, etc

Subs: Friedel, Walker, Dawson, Sigurdsson, Dempsey, Falque, Townsend

    Hi G10,

I think at the moment it'd be hard for Ade to perform worse then Dempsey full stop. He's such a good player yet looks lost with us at the moment, really hope we see the Fulham Dempsey appear soon.

Yeah a front 6 is an interesting way to look at it. Really hope we do see this sort of formation, the 4-5-1 isn't looking too effective and we're relying too heavily on Bale and Defoe. Ade needs game time and providing he's fit, we should really be starting him.

Wigan away was when VDV was back and scored, I think. Fair enough though I'd forgotten they both started those games, although I can't remember any times where I really felt they linked up together, certainly not like Ade and VDV did or Crouch and Defoe at Portsmouth.

Yeah you're right RE Wigan, Rafa did score from an Ade set up I think.

As I said, Rafa and Ade were a great combo so I don't expect the same potency but I reckon there's enough in them to get a bunch of goals and link up well. It's got to be better than the way Dempsey and Sigurdsson have been playing off of the striker.

Ade still might not be fully fit and put in the squad simply because we need another striker so I wouldn't get to excited expecting him to be available start.

Fair comments, I can't know how fit he is, but I just want him to start. If AVB does go with Dempsey or Siggy instead I hope it works, but Dempsey is looking knackered and Siggy just not doing what he should be doing.

A fit Ade is so much better than either of them ATM, so I guess it's a case of balancing probabilities, as it so often is.
