I believe we offered 6 million but they wanted 8 million Bassong 4 million Dawson 7.5 million Buttner 5 million Bridge on loan but would cost 5 million so that is 24.5 without Bridge as you bought Buttner. I think we got a better deal with the players we bought. Dawson would be good in Jan, but Ramirez and Mayuka are real game changers
I'm pleased with that. It's the base for a pretty damned talented team, if we can fill out our defense in January.
Buttner £5 Million ? I thought we could of got him for £2.5 Million and it was agreed , United got him for £3.9 Million anyway so not sure of your figure . Why would Bridge cost £5 Million ? Butland £8 Million I would of paid it to be honest . Bassong £4 Million yes I would of also paid that .
Buttner and Butland have no premier league experience. Need 6-7 defenders WITH premier league experience. Bassong, Dawson, Bridge. Three or four more required. Minimum outlay for all defenders plus GK probably 40 million pounds.
If it needs to be spent it needs to be spent . Buttner has played in the highest League , I did say that , Butland would be intoduced slowly , I say it again if it needs to be spent it needs to be spent , how much do we get a year from the Premierleague ? £90 Million ?
I'm not that disappointed with our defensive buys. I think that Boruc with the right mindset can be a good goalkeeper and having Gazzaniga and Davis as back ups is satisfying. Clyne's been good for us and we have strong back up in Richardson and we can call upon Butterfield if we need to. Fonte and Yoshida have done okay when partnered together. They look like they complement each other better than Fonte and Hooiveld did. I would have liked another CB in so along with Hooiveld we would have four centre backs that can realistically compete at this level.Fox hasn't stepped up that well but is still a valuable member of the team. I think he would be better suited as a back up to someone like Buttner/Marcus Olsson. So IMO I think we needed two more defenders but you can't say that there's been no effort to strengthen. We bought two senior goalkeepers and two defenders, it's not as if the issue has been totally ignored!
Aside from his wondergoal, Buttner has been unimpressive. And injured. He's played three games and been shaky in two. My Manchester United supporting friends who would love nothing more than to be rid of Evra don't think Buttner is ready. So I do not think he is the answer. But never mind that, we have 90 million to spend. Saints have spent 30 million. That gives us 60 million more to spend. 7 defenders + GK in January= 40 million. Leaves 20 million left over for an extra 400k a week on wage bill. We also need 13-15 premier league players in total . I trust that Ramirez, Lallana, Schneiderlin, Davis, Lambert and possibly one of Mayuka/Rodriguez qualify. Those 6 plus the 7 defenders and GK is 14 premier league players, and an entire starting 11 of premier league players. And then James Ward Prowse, Yoshida Maya, Jack Cork, Gazzaniga, and Reeves as backups, several of which are already borderline or may become premier league standard by next year. So Saints are in pretty good shape.
I have always said Evra overated and my United mates dont rate him that much , some Saints fan on here hammer me for that which I do find strange .
Yeah, my Man U supporting friends think he is the well past it, the weakest link in the team, and really want him replaced. But not with Buttner (or at least not yet). btw, if Buttner meets your standard of having competed in the highest league, then so does Steve De Ridder.
By the way, did anyone watch the League Cup highlights? Iago Falque looked class for Spurs and comfortable at this level. Begs the question why he only got half a game for us.
Saints were an absolute disgrace last night with the squad we put out! As if we are that good to send out a second string squad! We struggled to beat Leeds last year when we were flying! We have short changed the fans that pay more than good money to go to these games as well as the competition itself! I see the likes of Mata,Hazard,Bale,Walcott & the like were able to play! Yet we can't be arsed to stick one half decent first team player on the bench! Last night we were everything that is wrong with top flight football. Pure premiership money greed!
I was pleased when Saints got Falque on loan. I thought he looked promising, but he had the misfortune of getting his minutes in a game where Saints were unimpressive. After that, Puncheon apparently did what he had to do to get back into Saints' good graces. Between that and Guly being a known quantity and bringing some qualities NA felt the team lacked, there just wasn't room. I feel a bit bad for Falque as he got nothing out of that loan spell, but at the same time I find it difficult to blame Adkins as his goal was promotion and he achieved it. And now it has happened to us where we hoped that Aaron Martin would get some first team experience with Crystal Palace but that doesn't seem likely.
Picking a completely different team is always stupid. Players that have hardly kicked a ball, players coming back from injury and youth players never makes a strong side. Reserve games were always the best way of getting players match fit weather from injury or lack of game time. We would have been better playing our under 21 team with COUPLE of added experienced heads., so not to upset the balance of a team.
in my opinion and you can say what you like, i only think we need to sign 3 players in january... a lb a new cb (one with premiership experience..) and either an experienced defensive midfielder or a RW (like lens ). Also Ramirez was a fantastic signing and i'm sure given time when he is back from injuries he will show to many clubs why he was worth 12 million and will get us some vital points on some days.
